I always had a soft spot for him, might be since his Live at 3 days. Always thought he did a great job when he used to stand in on Liveline.

Only heard him a few days ago myself.

I was listening to him on the radio last Friday I think talking about his experience with surgery to lose weight and he seemed to be in good form. Apparently took I'll after that broadcast.
    May he rest in peace

His patience and balance made him a great broadcaster, Duffy's and Finnucane's shows sounded professional when he was at the helm.

    RIP

RIP. I loved his Out Of The Blue show he did back in the 90's.

He had only been on Saturday Night Show a couple months back and looked great, completely transformed from his previous self.

He was a really nice guy, R.I.P.

My lasting memory of him was when he was hosting a food program, eating the best of food throughout the country, he was like the proverbial pig in shoite LOL he loved that gig.
    R.I.P.

Very sorry to hear that- a broadcaster of high quality and a sharp contrast to some of the modern chancers.

    RIP.

That is so so sad. I always liked him, he was one of the old gaurd of actual talented presenters on RTE.
    He will be missed.
Only the other day I saw him on a clip in the 1976 Reeling in the Years and thought how surprisingly little he aged in those years.

He would have made a great Late Late Show presenter. Great at dealing with light and heavy stuff, every bit as professional as Gay Byrne, but so much more likeable and sincere.

I see on Twitter that Saturday Night Show will be doing a tribute to Derek along with Thelma Mansfield his ex Live At 3 host.

Ah, Thelma... My first crush, back in the (pre Dempsey's Den) days when she was the continuity announcer on RTE children's programmes.

Sad news. I think he was on The Den a few times threatening to eat Dustin, if I'm not mistaken. Seemed like a nice chap.

    RIP.

My favourite programme from Derek Davis was Out of the Blue as I taught it was a really interesting programme about fishing.

I thought he was looking great after seeing him on the Saturday Night Show only a while ago. He was a true gent. RIP Derek Davis.

I'm in shock. Looked so well on the sns recently and spoke so well on the Marion Finnucane radio show only last Sunday. He'll be an awful loss to broadcasting here in Ireland, has was shamefully very underused at RTE. What was the cause of his death?
R.I.P. Derek. A good solid Irishman.

He did indeed. Must have been the mid 80s just before Live at 3. And yes Thelma Mansfield, Anne Doyle and Debbie Harry were my first three crushes. I was a busy bee when I was a kid.

RIP Derek....a genuinely nice man. What you saw on TV was what you got in real life. I hope the fish are biting and the weather is with you wherever you are.

I agree! RIP Derek. I just about remember him from Live at 3 but since I've heard him on the radio and I thought he was more bright and incisive than he ever got credit for. On MF on Sunday he was brilliant. Very sad news.

I can't be the only person who - if there's ever any mention of charades - thinks, "oh... you mean, like play the game".

A very likeable, professional and genuine presenter, who will be missed.

    Very sad news indeed.

In all TV radio and journalistic modes he was very engaging and a great pleasure to hear and read.

This man certainly deserves to be classified as being one of the good guys of whom there are too few in modern Ireland.

Condolences to his family and friends - he will be an immense loss.
