Just came here to ask. Doesn't sound like the Garda chopper.

I can hear it and I'm in Dublin 9.

I'm panicking here, I've not paid my Television licence and the TV licence inspector in the Helicopter might be able to see my Television through my sky roof windows! :-(

Thanks for telling us....saves on hiring a chopper.

On a side note - got planning permission for those windows ?

    Yours,

    An Post.

I heard it too, in D9. But about 10 minutes before and about 30 minutes after I heard a Gardai chase... I don't know if they were linked.

I've heard it around 2 am in D1 just wondering what it was?

Can hear it in D2 just now

I heard this as well. It was really loud, a lot louder than any other helicopters I've heard over the area. I'm in Dublin 2.

Any chance this could be related?

I doubt it, I heard the helicopter between 11pm-1am (D9).

It was the Orange and White Irish Coast Guard Helicopter.

Could have been a training exercise or a medical emergency they were assisting with.

Helicopter in the sky... that's a strange one.

No buy a helicopter hovering low at all hours of night is strange.

maybe it is in the leafy suburbs, but it's unusual to NOT have GASU shining a light in the window of an evening out here in Finglas!

But it's not usual the Garda helicopter.

Heard it in Rathfarnham about 3 nights ago, surprised I saw nothing on twitter or boards about it until now.

It has passed by again about an hour ago. It's a helicopter I've never seen before.

At this stage it really doesn't matter anymore, but I'm still curious. :pac:

Helicopter tours of Dublin City out of Weston airport

That wouldn't be permitted to fly at night, the one most people are talking about in this thread was seen/heard at night

Most likely the Garda then, they have Alpha Sierra 1 and 2 and they also use a full black helicopter, I dont know its call sign or number

No, we don't "need" it. Why?

Are we talking about the one with all the flashing red lights? Unusual all right. Looked to be landed in the mountains just south of rathfarnham at about 2am. Stayed there for about 20 minutes.

Why did you feel the need to start the thread then?

If it was a dragon in the sky I would understand but I'm sure you have heard and seen helicopters before.

    Because I wanted to.

Nope, this was actually rare. Hence the curiosity.

It was. I'm used to seeing plenty flying out this way. This one was unusually large compared to what I see on a daily basis. It also had red lights, flashing more like an emergency vehicle than an aircraft. And it looked to land up near Two Rock, where it waited for an extended period.

Nothing wrong with a bit of curiosity.

Probably Adam Clayton popping home in a heli-taxi from Cannes :pac:

The helicopter that landed in the Dublin Mountains the night of the OP was an Irish Coast Guard heli based at Dublin Airport. A Sikorsky S-92.

Here's a night time video of it:

The red lights were the red beacons on the tail and the belly plus the red nav light on the port side.
