Removing sticker adhesive from cardboard

Tried to peel off a rather large sticker from a cardboard box container but unfortunately that sticky adhesive is left behind any tips on removing the adhesive

You can get sticker removal sprays but these will probably penetrate and discolour the cardboard. They're really meant for use on non absorbent surfaces like glass or china.

WD40 sprayed & left for 5 mins, rough wet sponge to run it all off:)
