    Hi all,

As per my other thread, if the worst does happen and I need to get a new wedding dress for my August wedding, can anyone recommend shops that can facilitate a short lead time?

    Thanks

Memories boutique in Dublin or cork, sample sales (try following bridal shops on Facebook) and even adverts and done deal! My dress is Jenny packham and I wasn't going to pay 4000 for it and actually managed to get it on adverts! Best of luck i can't imagine how stressful it must be, hope you get sorted soon!

This August? In fairness most places have a 4+ month wait if a dress nees to be ordered, that's once you actually find one.

You do know that for wedding dresses, its often a minimum of 6 months, if not more, to just get the dress in to the shop, right? Then there's another few weeks for alterations. If you're a small-to-average size and can choose a sample, or if you're not going for a gown from a bridal shop, you'll be fine, but you've really left it too late for most traditional gowns now.

Get it online. Mine took about 3 weeks to arrive and was fantastic from Light in the Box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,658 ✭✭✭Milly33

They were good then Flik Flak.. I was looking at them before..

Yep couldn't find a nice dress and to be honest don't think I like them, so meeting with the a dress maker to see sketches this week and we shall see, but if it isn't in budget or something im not into tis back to the drawing board.

Actually just thought there OP.. sorry I don't mean to plug but there is a Cork wedding page website on facebook and there are some lovely dresses on it. Mostly for under €500 someone put a fab one up there think it is a 10 - 12 really pretty, or there is another which I tried myself and not bad at all Might be off some help to you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,658 ✭✭✭Milly33

Did you get caught with an extra tax or anything Flik Flak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,832 ✭✭✭spottybananas

I bought a wedding dress on DHGate, very same idea as light in the box, it was unwearable. Paid 35e customs on it too.

  • Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,948 Mod ✭✭✭✭Neyite

I was initially having a short engagement and no bridal shop could tell me that they could get a dress into the store in less than 6 months. Some said that depending on the supplier, they could get them in 4 months.

Then you have to give time for alterations which can take a couple of weeks depending on the complexity of the design and extent of the alterations.

But if you are happy to wear off the peg, such as Monsoon bridal, or a good sample sizes sale etc then you shouldn't have a problem.

How bad was unwearable, as in shocking!! This I would worry about alright with them. Was very tempted by JJS house but I did get caught for duty in stuff I got there so I didn't do it in the end...

Well can it get much worse than unwearable? The fabric was incredibly poor quality, it was made so weirdly and badly that I couldn't even get the straps on me, the torso was far too short, the hips were too tight, and I had sent them correct measurements because I have previously ordered occasion dresses from similar sites and had no issues. You know the photos on those sites are of the dresses they copy yeah, they're not actually examples of ones they've made?

    Go onto sellmyweddingdress.ie (I think it's .ie).

Most sellers put their height, what size heels they wore and post pics of themselves in the dress too.

I just go on it to nosey at real brides every now and then ;)

I got my dress from inspirational bridal ( dot co dot uk)They are based in Manchester. It arrived in 7 weeks. We only decided to get married last April for July wedding (we eloped) so I didn't have enough time to wait for shops.

dress was gorgeous, I was so thrilled with it. I sent my measurements so it came in my size, just needed a few alterations in dressmakers (lowered the neckline a bit, little things like that).

I have to say I would highly recommend them. If you have a short time frame then they are worth a look

I see Mcelhinneys have a bridal sale online at the moment...maybe there will be a fab dress in your size there !!
I saw one I loved (if I was picking again) and it was sooo cheap !!

They well you that but I discovered that most will order a dress and can get it in within 2 months...I was given that option in different shops !!

The 4+month shenanigans is generally so as they can save on costs and order in a number of dresses at the same time. More expensive to order in one dress at a time.

Bhldn and jcrew worth a look. Check out sample sales happening at the moment.

White gallery in down has gorgeous dresses at 50%

sillysmiles if you know the dress designer and style number do a search for other stockists of the dress. Contact them and see if they can do a rush order. My sister in law had a problem with her wedding dress. The dress that arrived was stained and just didn't look right. The bridal shop was able to get a new dress from the US in less then 2 weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,658 ✭✭✭Milly33

Oh spottybananas that sounds awful with the dress. No sorry I should have phrased it better, I suppose I have just seen some people say unwearable because there were a strap where it wasn't suppose to be..

Going to try a few of these sites too just for a lookise

Edit - not suggesting sillysmiles is one of the angry brides storming the store, just saying I think this is the situation she finds herself in through no fault of her own.

No the poster was Millie33, and she says she hasn't picked any dress yet.

All I know is that when I was dress shopping, they were prepared to let me and my wallet walk out the door by telling me that I couldnt get a dress in three months. Every single bridal shop out of 5 told me that and referred me to off the peg stockists such as Monsoon and Debenhams where I could get a ready-to-wear dress. The one I picked, the shop agreed to rush it and I ordered it in September and it arrived in store in late January. Just about 5 months. And they said that it was a rush order.

Some designers do rush orders and can provide in tighter timeframe but you might have to pay a bit extra. I think even four months would have been fine with my designer. Milly though, if I were you id get cracking at it. What are you waiting for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,644 ✭✭✭✭lazygal

It is a while ago now but I got my dress in the bridal outlet in Dublin and they had a large range of samples to purchase and while they told me outright which dresses couldn't be ordered within my five/six month lead time, I had plenty of choice. I also visited Town Bride and Alexanders bridal and both had samples (in fact my close second choice was a sample from Town Bride).

I didn't get it either, maybe it's down to the designers that the shop stocks, so probably some shops can accommodate a short order and some cant?

I'd been hoping to have a 3month engagement but then had to push it back to 6 or 7 months, which then didn't suit some family. In the end, I've the dress home with me now, and when we decide on a date, I'll get it fitted. Everything else for the small wedding I plan can be organised in days.

Perfect then you are all set, well done... I do think maybe tis just another way of making more money or something with them but sure I don't know..

Just called the designer so Im calling in Friday to see what he as to say and we shall work from there..
OP was just looking through the Inspirational bridal site and they do have some loverly dresses on it... Very pretty

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,772 ✭✭✭✭fits

They make the dresses to order so it takes longer. Its a different type production line to high street fashion. Otherwise there is huge potential for waste. Would imagine some dresses take a lot of time to make too. If it weren't sold that's a lot of wasted fabric and wages.

Sillysmiles take a look at http://www.bestbridalprices.com for your dress. It also this site stocks my dress much cheaper than what I paid for it in store grrrr not sure of lead time but a friend ordered hers here and was delighted as it was the dress she selected in shop, but much cheaper.
