Mark Carroll bet him over 3k too I think, back when both were running slightly better times relative to Haile's time in Manchester.

Loved watching him,his win over Tergat(another great athlete)at Atlanta 96 was amazing as was his win over Komen shortly afterwards defo one of the all time greats.

I know he is long past his best but Mark Christie must be feeling pretty good about himself tonight (nice scalp to have on the wall)

I didn't watch it but I thought Geb was starting with the masses! Nice run from Christie

Watched this earlier, the elite women started about 20 minutes ahead and the elite men and the rest of the race started together.
Haile was announced as the final elite man just before the gun.

Not the first time he's retired, and probably won't be the last either.

He first retired after dropping out of New York marathon 5 years ago, and did so before the leaders had even finished I think which made him the bigger story of the day which was a bit unfair of him as the coverage was then of him rather than the race that was still going on.
    He then came back again.

He was just announced on the starting line yesterday, but only because he's one the Manchester race so many times, much the same as giving Paula a load of coverage before London marathon. He'll be back running other races again as other races will be quite happy to have him in their field, and he'll be quite happy to take a few quid sponsorship and then jog round. He was never going to be racing yesterday anyway, so it's a bit of a fake story to claim that he's retired now.

He was retired from top level running years ago, he's just being a celebrity runner now.

Hell of a lot less less nauseating than the non doped victory lap Paula took at London.
