Which isp for gaming?

I'm currently on Eircom DSL up to 24 mbit, I can't get fibre or upc in my area.
For the last year at peak times my pings are very high but very good at off peak times. My line is fine(no faults) but Eircoms capacity in my area is awful.

I've been on to Eircom support countless times at this stage and it's just been a waste of time.

Would switching to another provider solve my problem?
I don't want to switch provider and be locked into a 12 month contract when it could be potentially worse than EIrcom.

Eircom do not guarantee latency times. No ISP does.

The best thing you can do is find people on your street or in your area that are on the various ISP's and ask them to test latency times to countries you most likely play in at peak hours and see what's best.

    What exchange is it?

When it comes to gaming it can be transit issues (to UK, France). From what I've seen only UPC really manage this well.

Nenagh exchange. It's not a transit issue I've done a tracert and from the first hop to Portlaoise the ping is already very high but only at peak times all it's perfect off peak.

The first hop will be from modem to RAS, and second from RAS to core. It can be on the ATM back from the exchange to RAS or RAS itself, you cant tell as its encapsulated.

Test with a neighbours connection with another line operator.

People I know in the area are about 800m closer to the exchange. They can get eFibre so are connected to a cabinet rather than directly to the exchange. There's no point checking their connection is there?

If they arent having problems then no.

Their connection routes from the exchange but yours goes back to a central server(RAS) before it can route. You could try asking them to change your port onto a different rack, might help a little, if not changing provider might help. You really need somebody within eircom networks to pinpoint the bottleneck to know if it will, but as a residential customer good luck getting any such info.

They changed my port onto a different rack and at the same time cancelled my account which I had to get Alan from Eircom on boards to sort out for me. It made no difference.
I'm worried that if I changed provider it could be worse and I will be locked into a contract.

I doubt it would be worse, could be the same though. Its gamble with changing or grin and put up with it, it wont change soon if you've already got NGA in the area.

Fibre Build commenced - completion work is in progress

This will take a few hundred more lines off the exchanges ADSL racks, but if the issue is at Limerick thats a drop in the pond.

    Thanks for the info.
I notice vodafone have a 7 day cooloff. I think I should order and cancel if I'm not happy.

Gaming perfectly fine with mobile broadband using THREE's 4G "All you can eat" Data allowance for 20 Euros a month, getting consistent 35-60ms pings at whatever time. And I get 45+mbps download speeds, considering I live in the countryside... :D
