Another NCT fail thread!

Hi guys, my 00 Audi a3 failed the nct this evening on the following-

Emissions were slightly too high at high idle.
Three of the brake lines are frayed, one is bulging a little under pressure!!
Near side front ball joint is worn.
    Battery is improperly secured.

The car passed the nct 3 months ago but was backdated so due again this week, I'm surprised so much has gone wrong in that short space of time, but there you go.

Can anyone give a ballpark figure on repair costs? Or am I better off selling for parts/repair and buying a bangernomics car with full nct? Money is tight at the moment, so looking for the most cost effective solution.

Did it pass under your control or a garage bringing it to the test 3 months ago? If it was a garage Pat Cash was likely involved.

It passed privately, but you're correct, not under my control.

How is this an nct fail thread?

You drove your car, some wear happened, you failed nct and nct failed?

Sounds like the car is badly need of some TLC.

Securing battery brakers yard for bits that are missing. €20

Brake flexible pipes all round replace brake fluid probably needs pads maybe discs too.
Best case €200 but could be as high as €400 depending on what else needs doing.

But the emissions could be burning oil. Caused by worn piston rings making it uneconomic to repair or something simple like good service. Vacuum hose or sensor.

Get estimate for emission issue first then you'll have an idea if it's worth pouring more cash in 15 year old motor or jump ship to something else.

Thanks for that Visual, I'm gonna bring for a few quotes on Monday and see. Anything more than maybe €300 I think I'll just cut my losses and sell it on for another sub €1000 bangernomics.

Wreckless carry on for a tester to pass a car with frayed brake lines if indeed the tester got a few quid from Pat.

Brake hoses are very cheap, as would a battery clamp be from a breakers. When was the last time the car was serviced? That could explain the emissions.

I have a feeling the NCT is more important to you than having the car roadworthy. It checks for the MINIMUM standards in safety features like tyres, brake operation etc. The fact a car has a valid NCT is not a sign that the car is in good condition.

Of course having the car safe and roadworthy is important to me, hence why I'm looking for a solution-ie repair the car, or replace it with something safe and roadworthy. I don't plan on driving the car now that I know the brakes can't be trusted.

Car hasn't been serviced since I bought it around the start of March, previous owner said it was serviced a week or two prior but who knows if that's true. Have driven about 2500 miles since.

Can't see you sorting that for 300 unless you do all diagnosis & work yourself which won't behappening from what I can gather.

Emissions were slightly too high at high idle.
The fact that you didnt specify that it failed the low CO has me thinking the O2 sensor seems to be good, but the cat is not up to higher exhaust volume (€200 ishsecond hand fitted). What was the CO level?
Three of the brake lines are frayed, one is bulging a little under pressure!!
About €30-40 per corner + fitting, definitely do all 4. A €200-250 job
Near side front ball joint is worn.
A €120-180 job (depending on part price)
    Battery is improperly secured.
    DIY €20

An 00 A3??? Its a financial write off IMO
