Has anybody noticed odd business influences on Boards.ie?

    Recently I have noticed...

    Car dealers offering 'impartial advice'

    Landlords running the housing forum

Same sex marraige No Campaigners, trying to hide on boards as (newly registered) members.

I hope this thread is not shut down.

I think its in the interest of the boards community that Boards.ie remains impartial and trustworthy

    What do you think?

Your paranoia is well founded. Every time I open a thread I hear a little "pfffffft"...which is the noise made by a small release of mind controlling gas favoured the no campaign.

Board isn't impartial, it's a private business. Look up the term astroturfing.

There are a lot of "agenda" posters on boards i.e posters who only ever seem to post and soapbox about certain topics or issues. The no campaigners are just the latest. We had a lot of pro-Russian posters appear last year out of nowhere as another example.

    Was that because of Ukraine?

Boards does appear highly on google. Its great its so active. Not so great is the organised agendas.

The man on his own with an opinion or a small business is fine. But some big organisations seem to be abusing the impartial image of Boards.

I just hope they help fund the forum. If they do. It would be nice to be told it is an advert. Just like every other media source has to.

I have seen corruption in the past on boards.ie, something in the software and the site was down, but their IT expert fixed the corruption.

Mods are known to take bribes to in order to lift infractions. Admins and the higher ups get brown envelops to approve new fora. It's all around us and it's sickening, but what can we do?

Heard a story not sure if true, but a person who was repeatedly banned tried the brown envelope thing but didn't know how it worked (person a bit thick) and brown envelope was more akin to a dirty protest.
Needless to say the mod involved was not impressed, the Gardai were called in and it was DNA tested.
    Turns out it was bullsh1t.

The Politics forum used to have a fairly serious issue with partisan moderation, a couple of years back. During the Lisbon referenda it was so blatant as to be genuinely funny. Not nearly as bad anymore, however.

You can make sure you keep up with your payments. Our records show you're late again this month and bans have been mentioned in the admin forum.

Not just business interests - I remember when the Lisbon Treaty was going on and without doubt there were definitely government shills here trying to ram YES down our threats. I am sure it's the same re every referendum here.

The "no campaigners" are usually one sad person who has hundreds of accounts

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

A few people did mention that

I REALLY like boards. But I'm not keen on it being abused by organisations gains...

Like Tesco on HotUKDeals... Post their own deals. Same people vote it hot. Say its a great deal. It doesn't exist at all. Normal people say they can't find deal. Tesco shills flame them... The cycle repeats.

It would be sad to see boards infiltrated by organisations when they could just be open, honest, pay boards to be here, we get told they work for X and they help people on here. Everybody wins.

So what you are afraid of is not happening then? As said, Boards is always banning people for advertising/shilling.
There are Talk To forums all right for various companies, which pay Boards.

No it is happening. Which is why I started the thread.

What have you noticed being promoted in an underhand way on boards?

Its not just things you buy or vote for

But you're making out it's a Boards policy. Boards can't stop people from opening an account to do what you've described, but they're banned very promptly.
