As the title suggests I'm thinking if getting one of these but I am not too sure which as both are similar. Looking for peoples opinions on either.
I'd be looking at getting either 2014/2015 not sure which yet. All depends on the deal.

There is nearly €10k of a difference between entry models of both so really depends on what you want and how much you are going to spend. In other words a 4wd 7 seater X-Trail would be closer in price to a 2wd base Santa Fe.
So do you really need the 3rd row of seats and 4wd? X-Trail's 1.6d engine too would be a bit less powerful than the Santa Fe's 2.2d engine.

The 4wd makes no difference but I would need the extra seats for sure. I was also thinking about the new kia sorento. Any body driven one?

    The X-Trail is 2.0 I think?

EDIT: It seems not! I drove one recently and was very impressed with the power, I assumed it was 2.0!

€10k difference between an Xtrail and a Santa Fe?

Hyundai have obviously knocked up their prices big time...

Xtrail is only a little over €30k
An xtrail diesel was near €40k 6 or 7 years ago

Yes the xtrail is a 1.6 the santa fe is 2.2. Xtrail seams to be a bit more value for money.

    Warranty
    Nissan 3, Hyundai 5, Kia 7

The purchase price is not the only thing to consider. What you are actually getting for your buck is just as important.

Both the Santa Fe and Sorento are a lot more powerful than the xtrail as they have about 198 bhp each. They are also larger.

I've had a 2002 Santa Fe (great car). A Kia Sorento 2007 and a Sorento 2012, both fantastic cars.

Traded in the 2012 Sorento last January and got a very good deal as of course it still had 4 years full warranty left (still more than a new Nissan).

It depends on exactly what you want and how much you are prepared to spend but don't just look at the base prices.

A friend of mine has an 03 X Trial, and he wouldn't sell it for anything because he thinks its such a great car.

Have an 06 Xtrail here and love it too, put 140k on it and nothing bar servicing needed.. But the 2.2Dci is a noisy brute.

I thought the x-trail came with a 2.0 but apparently not, bit of a miss surely.

I'm wondering is the 1.6 on the xtrail not powerful enough to power a car of that size. I had a 1.6 a4 before and that really lacked power don't want to head down that route again. Also are the new xtrails big on space or are they cramped. I know the 3rd row of seats are small.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

1.6 a4 would be a normally aspirated 8 valve petrol from the 90s with 100bhp and 148nm of torque

1.6 xtrail is a turbocharged diesel from last year with 130bhp and 310nm of torque.

I'm not trying to be smart but surely the best way to answer these questions is by going and having a look/test drive in a Nissan dealer!

Meanwhile, to answer your questions anyway as I said previously I drove a new X-Trail a few weeks ago and was very pleasantly surprised by everything about it. Nice looking inside and out, nice to drive and not lacking in power at all.

Comparing an ancient 1.6 petrol A4 to a modern 1.6 diesel engine is irrelevant. Sure my dad has a 1924 Essex Super 6 with a 2.4 engine and the thing is flat out at 40mph, so at that rate even the 2.2 Santa Fe must be a bad job :pac:

Appreciate the answers. I'm going to look at both this week. Just looking for peoples experience s and any tips they have come across with the cars.

Still seems really lacking. Was in the new Sorento this week. Really impressed with the interior. Looks a bit American on the outside.

    I dunno, I haven't driven one.
The xtrail is basically a 7 seat Qashqai I thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The X-Trail looks a bit less mommy wagon than the Qashqai, at least it does to my eyes.

Overdid the chrome on the back I think. Or maybe it's just the one locally that's been tarted up.

I considered an X-Trail though didn't get to drive one - overall seems like a nice package though and well finished with good spec levels. SV spec with 7 seats is the way to go for best mix of price/ equipment. Four wheel drive will only drink more diesel so unless you need the grip or doing a lot of towing, get the 2wd model.

The Hyundai and Kia are both a tad big bigger outside, but inside neither feel that they are that much bigger than the Nissan. They will feel a nice bit faster but the 1.6 130bhp engine is a real peach though and will be more economical. If budget wasn't an option I think Id go for the new Kia, but it will cost you about 6k more than an SV X Trail

Note the 6th and 7th seats are tiny on all these cars and are for kids only, if you really need a proper 7 seater they won't really suit

I've had an x-trail for 9 months now from new, and I'm very happy with it. I went for the SVE spec, so I got all the toys and leather. It's fairly powerful for a 1.6 (more than the previous 2l I think) and it comfortably took myself, the wife, 3 kids and luggage around Spain and the UK. Plenty of luggage space even in the 7-seat version. It wasn't an option for me at the time, but I think you can order the 5-seat version now and I'd imagine that boot to be cavernous. It's also decent on juice - 5.5-6.5 l/100km on motorways between 110 and 120 km/h. If you gun the engine economy suffers.

As noted above, the rearmost seats are only for small kids, and for short journeys at that but handy to have.

The Santa Fé is a beautiful machine and a bit bigger than the X-Trail, but the equivalent spec (Executive) was north of 50k (for example glass roof and integrated GPS aren't standard) and out of my league. The list price for mine was 38k (before promotional discounts and trade-ins etc).

The Santa Fe is a wider car which can easily put 3 kids across the 2nd row and the 2.2 engine with 197hp and 430Nm is more punchy than the x-trail's 1.6 130hp 320 Nm. However gunning both along with 80% Motorway and 20% Urban Santa Fe 7.8 l/100km X-trail 6.6 l/100km.

Im looking at buying an 06 Santa Fe. Is it worth spending the money on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Depends on how well maintained it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It's a nearly 10 year old vehicle so the answer could be yes or no, depends on the vehicle in question and whether it's condition is mint or ragged.

The older models mentioned in the thread are very different models to the current ones. Both are a fair bit bigger and to be fair, nicer looking.

The Santa is very, very expensive for what it is. I know someone with a 151 and the spec is very poor for a €52,000 car. X-Trail seems like better value option.

    52k for a santa fe!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The cheek of Hyundai not being cheaper than a Renault!

It is a bit pricey though. But it is a substantial car.

Out of curiosity, what do you think it's lacking. Executive is poor for the price imo, but even I'd be hard pressed to complain about the premium. It's also got maybe 60hp over the Nissan.
