Could someone recommended a good book for the above time period for someone with a recreational interest in Irish politics? Thank you!

I'd recommend The Transformation of Ireland 1900-2000 by Diarmaid Ferriter for the 2nd part of your question. He's a fine historian and an engaging writer.

The 19th century in Ireland has had many books written about it. I've yet to read a complete treatise of the period though.
