I was told today that if you are paying tax you may be entitled to a refund and that there is a website somewhere, where you put in your PPS number and it will tell you if you are entitled to anything and how much you get... Any truth to this or is my source talking horsesh1t?

Be aware that if you use these services they take a % as a fee. You can do it yourself instead by contacting the Revenue directly and asking for a P21 Balancing Statement (assuming you're a PAYE 'customer')

You have to register, though, it's not quite as simple as just entering your PPS.

People get tax back all the time for various reasons. They are claiming additional tax reliefs or credits. They were over taxed for some reason (multiple jobs, emergency tax etc). Or change in circumstances ( marriage, unemployed etc). Usually if you are in stable employment where nothing changes and you aren't claiming additional reliefs or tax credits then no refund is due.

In the Internet era there's literally no excuse for the man in pub told me stories. There are multiple sites where you can look to see how the tax system works and what you may be entitled to. If you want, you can even pay companies to do it for you.

I've just been having a look at my PAYE Anytime page. Beside each year (2011 -> 2014) there's an option to request a P21. So my question is should I request it for 2014 only or do you do it for each year?

You can do it for each year if you want. But unless you fall into one of the circumstances already outlined, all should be in order and there will be nothing to refund. Also note that underpayments of tax can occur as well as repayments.

I didn't claim tax in 2013 or 2014, i can't login to that page anytime thing because i don't have my pin.

How much is a tax company likely to charge and how long does it take usually ?

Some charge a flat fee or a percentage of what you are due back. You need to check out some of the companies to see what they charge. Unless you are declaring additional income or claiming so massively complex relief the timeframe should be pretty short.

As an aside why would you bother to pay somebody to do something you could do yourself in 5 minutes?

You can ring up Revenue to request your P21 for the years you may be due tax back. Note that you can claim tax for up to four years (you can go back as far as 2011 currently!) Revenue should send the P21s out to you pretty quickly but there could always be a delay for one reason or another.

Just on the timeframe for using PAYE Anytime. Once I registered, I got my pin within a week maybe. After that I requested my P21 which was in my online inbox the following morning. My refund was in my bank account the following week. (I provided my bank details so I wasn't sent a cheque)

I wouldn't use one of the companies for tax back - using the above costs you nothing. If you are due a refund, those companies usually charge you for their services.

I just did this last week. I second just using Revenue.
I logged on to Paye Anytime on Monday week and pressed the Request the P21 Balancing Statement button for last year.
If you don't have an account with Paye Anytime then then sign up, you'll use it a few times. Or you can ring Revenue.

By Friday I noticed a nice lodgement to my bank account and I got the statement yesterday.

Unfortunately my missus thinks it's a bonus for her :(

The only caveat i would add to just using the request P21 balancing statement is - Your refund is based on the information which Revenue hold / have been supplied with.
Therefore if you had €100 medical bills for doctor visits, as an example, Revenue obviously will not know this and you will lose out on a few euro.
Other most commonly missed items are allowable work related expenses and non routine dental treatment.
If you know you have no additional credits or deductions due, then the P21 is perfectly adequate.

A question about that. I do have some receipts that I haven't sent in yet for last year. Does that have any bearing on the P21. I assumed that if I sent in receipts this year (for last year) they'd just put the credit onto my current years allowance.

Another caveat for the P21 is that I think Revenue can undercharge as well as overcharge :)
It wouldn't be so nice getting a letter from them saying I owed them money.

Your employer can indeed undercharge. If you complete the relevant MED1 OR MED2 Revenue will make the required adjustments.
Just make sure your tax credit and tax band on the P21 are correct.

Why pay someone to do it? The revenue website is pretty easy to use
