Separate Routers

    Hi,

I was just wondering is it possible to run separate routers, lets say for instance a gaming console isn't getting priority connection and when other users browse videos etc the connection starts to fluctuate.

Someone proposed a NETGEAR router solely for my games console so with that no interference would disrupt me whilst playing.

Sky Broadband just isn't cutting it and i need a solution to a problem which i'm sure you guys have had before which is in game lag and its VERY frustrating.

    All info welcomed.

    Thanks

Depends on whats causing the lag.

If you have a basic ADSL connection then using a second router as an access point wont help. A complete second connection (double your bill) will.

What do you mean by second connection?

A second DSL phone line. 2x the money, 2x the bandwidth.

Do you know what speed you're receiving at the moment? Try speedtest.net

My speeds are horrific, Ping is 68 ms Download is 1.56 Mbps and Upload is 0.15 Mbps

is that on wireless or connected with an ethernet cable?Disconnect everything too apart from your pc when doing the speed test.

If you are diffently getting ****e d/l speeds when connected with a cable and no other devices connected ring sky tech support as there could be a fault on the line

Also bear in mind that your distance from the exchange makes a big difference.
Again tech support should be able to tell you what your line can support.

It's wired, everything was disconnected from the internet when doing the test!

Fibre Optic isn't available where i'm at ( Mayo ) as far as i know anyways, but once its available i'm getting it!!

I'll have to give them a ring before i smash this box to bits >:(

Do you know the distance from the exchange to your house? would it be less than 3 km?

christ thats far and will explain the poor speeds and pings. There's probably f all sky can do as ADSL is severely limited by distance. And there would be no point switching to eircom as it would be still the same line.

Its bad form! I read an article about fiber optic being in the works and should be coming to the west around 2016 i hope its true!

I shall struggle till then i guess :p

Over 8km it will NOT work, so you're connected to somewhere other than you think.

Your line isnt really suitable for gaming, and eFibre likely wont reach you. Think FTTH in 2017 onwards, in the meantime try WISPs.

    Probably.

    WISPs?

    WISPs=Wireless ISPs.

To see who is in your area, go to this map and drop the marker on your house and tick Wireless ISPs. This will give you an indication of who is covering your area. They may not be able to actually hit your house, but they shouldn't charge you for a survey.

@ED_E - If HonestCry used that funky URL that tells whether he Prequals for eFibre or not, would that identify what exchange/cab he is connected to? At least then he would know how far he actually is from it.

Yeah, should do. He'll be between 5000 and 6500m though most likely.
