    Hi everyone,

I am looking for your recommendation in buying a used car which is fuel efficient. My questions are:
Is petrol or diesel engine better in terms of economy?
I am looking for 2008 or later models with 5 doors, could be saloon or hatchback. Also I prefer automatic transmission.

Currently I am using Astra 1.6 L hatchback automatic transmission. However very soon I am going to travel more with my job (500 km per week). That's why i am looking for a car which is more economical on fuel consumption.

    Any suggestions please?

Toyota Auris 1.4 Diesel. Very fuel efficient by all accounts.

The automatic auris diesel is a dog.

Thanks for the suggestion for Auris.

How is WV Golf in terms of fuel economy?

A golf dsg (auto) won't be any less economical than a manual in real life.

The problem with the Auris auto diesel is that it's basically a manual box with robotised clutch and actuators pulling the gear linkages. It's jerky, never knows what gear to be in, and not dependable, it'll also burn the clutch out if you try and balance the car on a hill like you would on a conventional automatic.
If you must have an automatic Auris, then the Auris hybrid is the way to go.

That figure might as well have plucked it from the busted banks speech the proverbial xxxx xxx

If you dont know how much fuel is in the tank you have no idea is this good MPG or KPL or liters/100 kilometers

Some cars have stupid big tanks and some cars have stupid small tanks.

If the guy says he get 1400kilometers to large 100 liters tank that 14 KM per liter or 7.2 liters per 100 kilometers @1.50 a liter about €0.11 cent a kilometer Thats a very average fuel economy and at 100KPH so slow

If the guy says that he gets 1400 KM on small 30 liter tank thats 46 KM /per liter or a sensational 2.2 liters per 100KM @1.50 a liter about €0.03 cent a kilometer .Thats maybe worth driving so slow

Many car tanks are between 35 to 65 liters .

Any idea what size the tank is ???

50 litre tank in those, 110 bhp 6 speed , combined kms per gallon 141. extra urban 151km per gallon.
    O to 60 in 11 secs. Co2 g/km 85.
    Official tank range 1561 kms.

nice figures for a long commute, for an engaging driving machine not so good.

My mates Citroen SUV thing gets about 40MPG at 120 on the highway
Real barge to drive luv it when I borrow it for long drives .
It has the quasi automatic you use paddles to go up and down the gears .
You can revert to non automatic if you want to be driver type but on SUV waddler not worth it.
Its can be sometimes jerky in automatic in town especially on hill starts in first gear pulling off .

if you can handle the expensive bills that can come with older Citroen if the electronics act up they are generally good cars for economy on fuel

    @ bbsr

    Thx

1400 KM on 50 liter tank thats 46 KM /per liter or a semi sensational 3.6iters per 100KM @1.50 a liter about €0.06 cent a kilometer . In old speak about 80 MPG .Thats is interesting economic but is it worth driving so slow for most folk .

Certainly going on my wish list 100kph is where i drive because i am a cheap skate ha ha

is that even possible on 110 bhp engine? 46 kms/liter?

A quick look at some German and UK sites shows real life use of a 320D from 5.5-6.5 l/100 km or 43-50 MPG.

This would vary with route and driving style but might give you an idea.

interesting mix the kilometers distance with gallons sure makes the numbers bigger
141 kilometers is about 89 Miles to the gallon
151 kilometers is about 94 Miles to the gallon
Smaller number but still good for 1600 diesel clearly the sixth gear works well

real world those numbers are probably based on driving at 60kph

So 80MPG at 100KPH is still good
Probaly find at 120 kph drops down to 65 MPG

For practical reason most measures need to be verified what speed was the car doing as even gas gusseler dogs will return OK MPG at stupid slow speeds .

maintenance is key to keeping the MPG high if your doing long commutes every day .

    Yep
BHP comes from the amount of fuel burnt not the engines rated BHP

A small car going at 100KPH with small engine 55BHP will need to make about 15BHP to keep that speed

A medium sized car with 110 BHP engine at 100KPH will need to make about 20 BHP to keep that speed

However with tweaks like a 6th gear and so forth it can be possible for the medium sized car to drop down closer to the 15 BHP to keep the speed 100KPH

Now of course if you increase speed to 200KPH then you quadruple the air resistance That often means even 110 BHP will probably not get to 200KPH but flatten out at 170KPH which is three times the air resistance and use gobs of fuel .
The small car will probably stop at 130KPH and also use a lot extra fuel to give the 55BHP .

110BHP only has real meaning at top speeds where car tops out .
More speed less miles per gallon

Fastest production car out there with I think is 1500 BHP and tops out at 400 KPH
The tyres are only good for 15 minutes at those speeds before they burst.
However the fuel tank is empty in twelve minutes so no problem
Also MPG is probably less than 4 miles per gallon mabe even only 1 mpg . Fast speeds you need lots of BHP to overcome air resistance and deep pockets to pay for the terrible MPG

Wow, thats some serious detailed discussion about BHPs, air resistance, mpg, etc. I didnt know many of the facts, good you all shared it here, i will check online for more details. cheers

Worth pointing out that WhatCar got a combined figure of 61.9 mpg from an Octavia green line on their real world mpg test.

My A3 2.0tdi DSG gets me around 600 mils to a tank (55litres)

Would assume A3s all A3s up to around 2010 would be similar if not better..
A4s etc dont know..same engine AFAIK but would obviously weigh more and have different Maps
