Hi, I have a second car - opel astra 1.4 which I use max 1 weekend per month. So as you can imagine I am covering very little miles but I still require the use of this car when I do! Is there any alternative car insurance arrangement I can get to cover me when I actually use it rather than having to take out a full premium???

Nope, best bet is to sell that car and get one for the 2 days a month you need it.

<SNIP> No you can't advocate fraudulent advice on boards.

Usual the other car needs to have a policy on it from the "owner" afaik.

The car is insured full time to ensure it is covered if it was stolen from your driveway - it's not just being covered when you are driving it.

Would you consider using Go Car service?

For that level of usage I'd just rent a car whenever I needed one. I used Enterprise for a while a few years ago and they offered a pick up and drop off service which was pretty handy. It might be worth giving a couple of local rental companies a call, explain what you need and ask if they would pick you up and drop you back whenever you need to rent.

I wish go car or rent a car was an option but it is not feasible.
Situation is my better half and myself both live an work in Dublin but travel home to Galway once a month etc. We have another car we use for every day use in Dublin and traveling home. But when we are both in Galway during a weekend we both need a car as we both live out in "the sticks"! She is West Galway and I'm in east Galway which doesn't help either!

Buy a old car more than 30 years old classic .Insure for a lot less as it assumes that annual mileage is very low as most classic users only take them for once in month spins often to classic car reunions . Road ax it cost €45 a year on classic . A 30 year Old Merc 3000cc 6 cylinder diesel can easily do 1,000,000 miles that means if there is genuine 300,000 on the clock and not 1,300,000 then your safe to go another 700,000 miles. you need new injectors every 250,000 miles

Not a bad idea. Requires garaging though.

You don't even necessarily need to go that old if you don't mind the tax. Some insurance companies will happily insure a 15 year old car as classic so will have reduced premium. It does rule out getting a big engined car as the tax will offset and savings but might be worth looking into.

You can sell or give this car to a friend.
Then you can borrow it from this friend every time you need it, and drive it under your insurance using "driving other cars" extension.

Thanks for the replys folks but I dont think I will go for the vintage/classic option as I still want to be able to rely on a car that wont let me down. Looks like I will have to stick with it!

Taxi / Hackney work out cheaper? Factor in nct, tyres, servicing, etc

I dont think so for Dublin Galway return on the weekend
Maybe fly with those small two engined things airline to Galway airport and get taxi around Galway might be cheaper

Alternatively go with the better half to Galway city in same car and then use taxi/hackney around Galway for that weekend then meet up again and come back together in same car for return to Dublin

There is also a cheapo bus with wifi and skangers thrown in for free every hour to Galway and then taxi/hackney it around the weekend

How much can the insurance of a 1.4 Astra be???

Leave your Astra in Galway. At least you will save the cost of driving it there every month.

Have one car and drop her off at her folks then drive over to yours. Galway not that big. You could taxi about for less per annum than you'd spend on a second car. You just need to realise that you don't need a second car
