I graduated from a prominent university 4 years ago and was awarded a 2.1 in Elec engineering. I got my first job for nine months after that but left due to mental stress, the inability to sleep for nearly a month and cognition downward spiral due to anxiety/depression on the job. I lost confidence, control of my life and fell into pretty bad depression/anxiety spiral after too. I did close to nothing for the next three years unfortunately. I meant to go back to university after two years but the course wasn't for me in the end and left (I did poor research)

I have been avoiding looking for a job... now that must change. I will take ANY job (paid or unpaid) just to get back into the work force. Any tips on where to look for a suitable job for someone in my situation? At the moment, all the jobs on job sites look daunting.. How will I even fill in my 3 year gap..?

    Experience:
Worked in petrol station for 3 years, part time
Working in a manufacturing company as a material handler, summers
After university, worked in a software company mainly to do with automation(stress)
    ...
    ..
    I'm now 28..

    hi there,

I'm really sorry to hear what you have been through. I would recommend that you go to counselling before you decide to do anything, otherwise you will end up in the same situation again.

    Your mental health is PRIORITY!!!!

Once you feel content within yourself then I would go about what you want to do with life, you are only 28, you are still really young.

As for the 3 years you took out if you really wanted to say something you could always say you were travelling, alot of people would have been without work for the last few years so please dont think it would be anything unusual to potential employers.

My main advice t you would to make sure you are happy and strong enough within yourself before you go about doing anything, you have loads of time!!!!

I hope this helped a small bit

I fell into a downward spiral of stress, sickness and other issues because of a job I had also. I too couldn't sleep. I hated the town I lived in, I hated my job and resented the people I worked with. I got angry to the point where I nearly lost control and all hope. Getting fired surprisingly enough, was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I was able to take time off to relax and get back into the swing of things. I was assessed by Mental Health and my diagnosed with Bipolar 1, a significant step up from a diagnosis of depression previously. I'm medicated now and considerably well balanced now. I now work for another Multinational now, but I've never been out of work as I can't sit still long enough and do nothing.

That's my story in brief, but we're all different. I would agree with Counseling before returning to work and if returning to education is for you, then you'll have to find what you really have a passion for.
