    Hi all,

I currently drive a 2011 petrol lancer with 50k miles on the clock. I've recently changed jobs and will now do approx 25-27K miles per annum. In order to save slightly on fuel and for a better resale value in three years I was half considering changing to a 2011 diesel lancer however, I'm just wondering will the cost of upgrading far exceed the saving on fuel?

Looks like 35.8mpg on the petrol versus 44.1mpg on the diesel so less than 20% saving on fuel costs, calculate how much a year you are spending on fuel but I can't really see if being possible to change and make savings. The servicing costs will be more on the diesel.

just having a quick look at 2011 lancers on donedeal

diesels seem to be going for €12-14k
    petrol are more like €11-12k

so lets say, realistic cost to change of 3-4k, say €3500 for a good average.

parkers.co.uk says the 1.5 petrol can achieve 42mpg and the 1.8d can achieve 53mpg.

    if you do 30k miles a year in the petrol car @ 42mpg with petrol @ €1.45 a liter, it would cost €4660, plus a years road tax @ €390 = €5050

    if you do 30k miles a year in the diesel car @ 53mpg with diesel @ €1.35 a liter, it would cost €3438, plus a years road tax @ €156 = €3594

    a difference of €1456 a year,

    3500/1456 = 2.40

so almost 2 and a half years to recoup the savings of going diesel. personally, i'd not bother.
