Pre marathon training training...?

Howdy all. I've signed up for Dublin (will be my 3rd marathon and will be aiming for 3:3X) and I've been tipping along mileage wise but not doing anything much in the last 7-8 months. A week generally looks like 3 easy runs, a session on a wednesday and a longish run (10-14) miles at the weekend. Missed the last 2 weeks out sick unfortunately. My last race was the Mallow 10 mile and finished in 74 odd minutes I think.

Anyway, my question is; what would be the best way to prepare for the marathon training schedule.
I think I have about 7-8 weeks before the 18 week plan kicks in, so how best should I spend this time. What's everyone else doing? Could I try and aim for a better 5K/10K time, i.e. shorter stuff - or just try and build mileage with more easy runs? I know 7-8 weeks is not a long time to get much done - but maybe some of you have some ideas?

    Thanks!

    Base building ~ 6-8 weeks
    5/10k training ~ 6-8 weeks
    Marathon specific ~ 10-12 weeks

Do you think the above is suitable in all cases?

I've gone through the first 2 parts already this year, but was planning on embarking on an 18 week plan as a lead up to the marathon rather than a 12 week plan.

It's hard to say all cases but it should work for the majority. 10-12 weeks of marathon specific work should suffice as long as the runner has established a good base (with some long runs up to 16 miles), and has increased leg speed and improved running economy with the 5-10k training.
