Hi does anyone have any good/bad points on these cars ?

It would be the 1.9 (105bhp) TDI version i was told stay away from the more troublesome 2.0 tdi engines ??

What are these cars like : eg Fuel consumption , common problems etc ?

Dual mass flywheels and clutches tend to give problems and a re an expensive fix, but they give bother on most modern diesels so not confined to the VW.

The handbrake release switch can give trouble too as can the rear calipers, which have an electric handbrake motor. I've heard of a few cases where people had to replace these.

The ignition barrel is another known issue, it locks the steering column and can be a job to replace. Thankfully the part is available separately now, whereas before it was a costly full column.

There are a few others but can't think of them off hand..

There are a few different symptoms of flywheel failings. The main one is to feel for vibrations in the clutch pedal when taking off etc. A quick Google will fill you in in the rest of the symptoms.

If it is getting bad you may hear a knock or bang from the clutch area.
It will go in or around 100k miles
