Hi everyone how's it going! Just wondering would anybody know how much it would cost me to insure a 1.0 1987 kp70 starlet (boxy starlet as many people call them) I'm 18 and only have my full license just over a week! I hear from many people that they are In the so called black books of insurance companies because they are popular with younger drivers, hence me getting quotes of over 2 grand under my father's name (12plus years NCB)
Also would be told to f**k off when I tell them I'd like to declare modifications..
I don't want to go down the route of not declaring my mods and then being unfortunate and having a crash!
    Cheers!

It's just not going to happen.

Insurers are wary of insuring cars over 10/15 years old, not a mind an 87 under an 18 year old with a fresh licence.

It Is possible but? I have heard of lads who've gotten insurance in their own name for just over 2 grand on their first policy

I know exactly, I can't get a descent quote on anything I want to drive. Not fond of going down the 1.4 golf route they are too common and as a car enthusiast I'd rather something like a kp70 but it's looking unlikely.

Your father has 0 Years NCB on a second policy unless they insurer has mirrored it. NCB can only be applied to 1 policy at a time, and I'm assuming he has his own car - which is why the insurance company will come after you to reclaim all costs for fronting (if you're a "named driver" while actually being the main driver, which will be blatantly obvious).

Yeah correct, he has a company van so he would be the main policy holder of starlet with me as a named driver whilst my mother would be the main policy holder of their car.

I had a 1.0 Yaris for 2 years, now since I've built up some no claims I have a 5 Series. Start with something like a Yaris/Feshty and in a few years get what you want!

May not make it any cheaper though as insurance companies are copping onto to this which is known as fronting and will just load the highest risk driver on the policy irrespective of who is listed as the main or named driver.

You'd want to check that - Commercial NCB usually doesn't apply to private vehicles.

True! Just dreaming of the moment I can get insured on a yoke with proper power!
    Cheers

He's the main policy holder on their car for the past 12+ years maybe more at the moment! He's a named driver on the companies fleet insurance. I'm talking about when his policy is over switching over their car to my mams name and then he'll set up a new policy in his own name with me as a named driver.
To be honest I'd rather start my own policy as I don't want to pay extra for ncb protection and also the fact I'll be a first time driver and there's a higher chance of having an accident and I'd rather not do that under his name

I know that's why id rather get my own policy. But with the ridiculous quotes I'm getting it's not at all looking possible!

You will eventually get a quote in your own name but it will be €2k plus and will need to be on a 1.0l Yaris. That's just the way it is when you're 18. There's not many other legal routes of going about it.

Honestly within a few years of careful driving you'll be in something plenty powerful.

    Insurance companies are no fools.

18 + new licence + 18 year old car + car that's in fashion with teenagers = very expensive quotes.

Eliminate 2 of those items for cheaper quotes.

Have a look at Parkers.co.uk for the insurance groups of cars your interested in and get one that has the lowest possible.

Ignoring your age, lack of experience, the age alone of the car will prove near enough impossible to insure

Plus if you ever had a tip in one of those Starlets it would crush like a beer can.

    Clio/Yaris/Polo?

i have a full non irish license for 9,5 years and I cannot even insure a normal car in Ireland, except for 2 grand / year.

Why do you want to get insured on a "yoke with proper power"?

You'll have to suck it up like the rest of us here and go for something a bit less risky for insurers unless you can stump up the cash. For a few years anyway.
