Not Firing Up.

    Fiat Punto Mk2

Brokedown, Engine just cut out. Got the breakdown rescue guy out.

Said there's fuel getting in, Plugs are sparking, Seems fine. Hooked up computer says no faults found. Sorry mate don't know.

When I turn the key the car is ticking over. It wants to start but just won't fire up. Check all the leads. Checked fuel, Recharged up the battery and took the spark plugs out to check myself and everything seems fine. Can't think of anything else except maybe a crank shaft sensor fail.

I've no mechanic and can't get the car too one. Anyone had any similar problems?

Did you actually pull the rail out and see if there is fuel?

There's a bleed valve on the throttle body, I checked and it's squirting out. You can see fuel in the body also when you pull the throttle cable.

Timing belt snapped? these are non interference engines so no damage would be done and no untoward noises, the engine would just cut out

Have you a second key for your car? If so please try that... just wondering if its immobilizer issue?

    Only got the one key.

Well it wasn't the crank shaft sensor. Got one to try.

Thinking it may be an electrical fault. or a dodgey battery not giving enough power to the ecu to tell it to fire.

Just took the battery out and charged it up to full, Put the multimeter on it and it reads 12.4v.

Put the battery in the car and turn the key, the car cranks but won't fire and its reading about 10 - 11v on the meter.

After 3 attempts of trying to start, battery is reading between 3 - 5v on the meter, and now doesn't even crank, just the few clicks and the clock resets on the dash as if the battery is drained.

Really don't want to pay 100 quid for a battery and its not the issue.

    F**K you FIAT

EDIT: I have rang a mechanic just waiting on the guy to come :)

Where u based? Have you any easy start handy to spray into air intake while cranking to confirm it's not insufficient / poor fuel?

Check the two plugs going in to the ECU and also the earth wire that's connected to the throttle body.

Also, the timing belt might not be snapped but might have jumped. As mentioned before, it's a non interference engine. We are talking about 8v are we?

Yeah 8v, Checked the cables but can't really tell if they are dodgy or not. Timing belt would be above my head. Had a guy look at it and he said it was just the battery. New battery and still the same. Now he won't answer the phone.

If anyone on here is a mechanic or knows one wants to have a look (Cabinteely, Dublin) because I can't get anyone to come to me. There's cash waiting even if its just for some advice. Really just want to know if I should dump it or not.

Are you around Sat afternoon? I'm quite familiar with the engine. Can have a look for free. There's a bit of stripping involved to check the timing properly though.
I have a half decent Fiat software to scan it as well.

Only seeing this now sorry. Many thanks for the offer. Very much appreciated.

My mate came back last week. Went over everything. It's the ECU that's knackered not sending the info to fire and also he said the timing belt is about to snap. Too much cash so she's going to car heaven.
