Rear passenger door has mismatching paint and repair job looks a bit poor but then again it's a 14 year old sub €1k car. You would still want to have a mechanic look it over though. If it's mechanically sound then could be worth a punt.

looks like it's had more hits than elvis. personally, i wouldn't. you could get a far better avensis within your budget.

I hadn't noticed the paint and repair, thanks for pointing it out.

    i'd offer €850 on this one. http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/00-toyota-avensis/9105712

short on test and a fair few miles, but it has the older 4a-fe engine which is well capable of doing that kind of mileage all over again and to be fair, it'd probably pass a test with minimal effort.

same again, a bit light on test, but seems very genuine, it'd be a decent buy for €550-600.

these cars are fairly simple and the chances of being hit with a big shock at NCT time are fairly slim. for that reason, i'd rather buy one from a long term owner, or one with a bit of history that looks straight than one that has been tarted up to pass a test.

the one in the OP as pointed out, the passenger rear door is badly matched, the panel gaps around the front end are fairly bad, it's missing a fog blank and it has a nice few scuffs. now i know it's an "old" car, but it also gives you an idea of the life it's lead to this point. the two i've linked have done similar mileages but still look very tidy.

I'd concur on the second one especially, if it drives well and appears straight, the history helps alot - although they would keep going on poor maintenance they may burn a bit of oil. This is the closest thing to a carina E that you'll get - which I think is arguably the best car of the last 20 odd years.

I'd leave out the mark ones, and go for a mark two that came out in 2003. They are stronger, and there are plenty on Done Deal for under 2000 Euro's. Best of luck

The mk1 avensis with 4a-fe engine was a much improved version of the Carina E.

Never understood some peoples view of the carina e being great. The Carina E was nothing special at all imo. Actually was one of Toyotas poorer efforts, especially UK built models. The Carina II before it and the corolla e10 and e11 were all better built cars I think.

    Agreed .
The 1.6 petrol versions have nasty habit to blow a gasket at 150,000 kilometers .
Once the gasket has been fixxed they are OK

However lots of owners just keep going with blown gasket filling up with water .The blown gasket engine is often repeatedly overheating and this often wrecks the radiators as they are plastic and plastic radiators crack from the heat .

The trick with these car blown gasket change it striaght away as the downstream damage isn't worth it .Then your sorted .try to buy from the owners who would do blown gasket straight away .

the Japanese import versions were tops but also could blow gasket at less than 200,000 kilometers .

Once gasket is fixed they often run for donkeys years but do start to use a tad too much oil in the diesel versions .

Both these Avantis and Carina's are up there with the Nizzan 1.6 version keep going and going .

Good luck with the car you buy

    Jed
