Hi All, not much of a poster but need some help!

Need a new car along the lines of this...

    Budget of 8k - 12k.
Must have five doors, resonable boot space, cruise control.
Mainly short trips < 10k miles per year.
Reasonable power, would like 140bhp but will settle for less as I expect I will have too.
Preferred to have leather and some toys.
Try to keep tax below the 750.

Civic 1.8 sounds like the way to go, post 10 reg onwards has cheap tax and they are light enough on petrol.

Nice suggestion, there's a couple on carzone that might fit the bill (newbie can't post links).
A 2010 at Clonskeagh Motors and a 2010 silver one at Joe Duffy. There is also a 2008 accord 2.0 petrol at Clonskeagh for 9750. Would the accord have a much bigger boot?

Probably would, but the civics is a lot more useful in terms of access and flexibility with larger items.

The accord will have a higher tax rate but it's got a better finish and more refined.

Post 08 civics have de chape tax too (not usually on 3 or 4 door though. Only 5 door)
An 1.8 EX model should fit the bill.

I'm considering 1.4 Passat now also if I can get a highline. May be a little less power but fits the bill?

There is a good selection of 09 and 10 Toyota Avensis diesel estates for sale on carzone within your price range, and if you go through a main dealer and get a good one, you should get another ten years out of it with Toyota's outstanding reputation for reliability. Best of luck

    Mk5 Golf GTI. Job done.

Yup I'm now considering the GTI and I might even go a little higher on the budget, strange how that happens! Must have a look at the golf boot, is it similar in size & shape to the focus hatch? I need it to suit my wife, myself and our soon to be born baby.

You'll get 10 years out of most other cars the OP is looking at also, and at the end of it still have some kind of soul. :)

It entirely depends on the make, how old it is, and most importantly how well its been looked after, and how well its been driven. For example there is a 2002 Toyota Corolla for sale on Done Deal with 97000 miles on the clock for 2500. If that has been well looked after, it would be possible to get another ten years maybe more out of it. Up until yesterday there was an 06 Toyota Avensis diesel estate with 119000 miles on the clock for 35000, there is plenty of mileage and ten years maybe more left on that car if well looked after. However you are right. There are other cars that have another ten year life span in them if well looked after. How about changing your 166 for an elderly Lexus IS 200 there plenty on Done Deal for under 2000 Euros.

I agree with you re maintenance. A 2006 Avensis estate diesel with 119k miles is very very optimistic.

    I think I'll keep my 166.

Did a deal on a Octavia vRS. The wife and I agreed that life is too short to drive a car we don't enjoy which we've been doing that with both our cars for the last 9 years. So we added a few more bob and looking forward to picking it up in a few days. It has the nice compromise of power, toys and space.

I've to use the fact its diesel to drive more! I think it will be easy to do that :)
