2007 Xtrail 2.2DCI. Bought as a non runner, replaced full timing chain kit and going well now.

    Just one issue...

When cold it makes a loud knocking/tapping noise from the engine when under load. Goes away after a few mins driving and grand until the next day when fully cold again.

No smoke, no lack of power, no engine codes.

Have tested without aux belts and ruled out anything associated to those.

I would be grateful of any ideas.

If that's the same engine as the almera van and I have my suspicion it is then look up 2.2 almera trouble. Could be the scv (suction control valve). Is the idle erratic?

Same engine yes (YD22DDTI). Had considered SCV but idles correctly, maybe very slightly roughly for 10secs when cold start, but not bad.

Taken from net with very same symptoms as yours. (When I got to the garage I was surprised. he said it will cost me 50pounds. He also said that it isn't the chain. he said, that he striped the belt that runs the alternator, water pump and compressor then he lubricated pullies and then he put it back together and the noise was gone)

small chance it's piston slap ?

@kay9 Have already ruled out anything on aux drive belts.

@gctest50 Considering piston slap, its mentioned in the nissan service manual, no easy fix this?

easy but pricy i'd imagine - head off, sump off, pistons out

check the bores, worn/damaged too much = new block :( (if you can't replace liners, not worth replating etc etc )

you'd want to be sure as possible before you go ripping though
