    hi,

Just wondering has anyone experience of driving the above?

I'm considering buying one through a private seller, just viewed today, it's a perfect car really, spotless inside and out, 1 previous owner, regularly serviced and never failed anything on an nct. The seller is genuine nice person and I trust them that the car is perfect.

The only problem is I didn't particularly enjoy it to drive, it's pretty smooth and seems to have very nice steering, responsive brakes. It just felt a bit heavy tho and the gear stick kinda clunky. Is this normal for a golf? I usually drive a corsa so I guess it would take time to adapt to a golf, maybe I would get used to it. Also I was a bit nervous with the seller beside me, didn't want to drive to fast :) and was only a short test drive...

anyway I'd really appreciate any advice or opinions if you have it. Especially does it take time to become comftarble driving this type of car

If you never plan on going on a motorway or overtaking another car go for it. The 1.4 is a dog worst powered engine ever.

Really? I've read that on other forums but didn't believe it. I've a 1.2 corsa so was hoping it would be a decent step up in power. I would be on the motorway a small bit , mostly City driving tho but with a drive from dub to Mayo every 6 weeks. It's a shame, such a nice car.

How about the 1.6. Would that have a better engine?

Your 1.2 has the same power as the 1.4........

You should really drive another similar Golf and see if that clunky gear change is there. The gearboxes on VWs of that age were known to be soft so it is possible that it's not 100% and a major bill is not too far off. So test drive another one for comparison and definitely have a mechanic inspect any car you intend buying.

Have another view of the car, Let the owner bring you for a long drive in it first on street roads and a little motorway driving, then you have to test drive it at a similar speed, It's a strange car to you and you being a little nervous and maybe driving too slow its possible that your revs were not high enough when you were changing gears, after the second test drive you would know how the car really feels.

    Maybe buy a Civic instead.
