    hi,

i ran in to the back of someone a few days ago, due to them slamming on the breaks to be courteous!!!! very small damage on both vehicles, front & back bumpers, we exchanged details the he rushed on saying he was due at a meeting(not waiting for guards) waiting to hear back from him regarding damage to decide whether to go through insurance or just pay.
i understand that i am the guilty party as i ran into him:mad:
not waiting for the guards wont have any repercussions, will it?

No need for the Gardai unless someone is injured. Wait for his call if it's more beneficial to pay for the repair yourself go for it. If not leave your insurance company deal with it. Either way you should report an accident to both the Gardai and you insurance company AFAIK.

Are you certain it wasn't a deliberate slam-on?

    Write everything down now.

Let's hope he doesn't suddenly develop Whip lash!

Or suddenly discover that He has a well paid job and his car was full of his colleagues, who of course have well paid jobs and now also have whip lash.

    Stop scare mongering.

This would be highly unlikely to happen op.

It may be possible that the driver develops a case of whip lash either genuinely or not. If he does leave it all to your insurance company they know all the games people play.

There have been recent cases where judges have effectively overturned the presumption that the guy behind is at fault, in part because of staged accidents where a guy suddenly sails into the lane in front of you and slams on the brakes.

I'd be suspicious of someone sailing off like that, did you get a look at his insurance disc, did he show you an insurance cert?

But other posters are correct, there is no obligation to wait for the Gardai (or even to report it to them at all) if there is no personal injury.

A lot of insurance companies expect you to report it, just call to local garda, ask him to note it on the log, date, time. Regs etc. They will understand if you tell its a been dealt with private.... It Happened to me, it was a good thing I did get it recorded, because the person tried to disappear and then change their story.

I understand that some (maybe all) insurance companies want you to report it to the Gardai but I fail to see what you can achieve by going along to a Garda station after the event to report a material damage (only) accident. No member of the force is going to chase the other guy up and demand insurance off him or carry out an investigation of any kind so what's the point?

Because then you have a record if anything goes pear-shapped.....

You have a 'record' of the fact that you went to the Garda station to report an accident which may or may not have happened - where's the value in that?

the whole whiplash thing has me worried, wondering should i have waited for guards anyway?
i hope he's decent, it was only a tap really, small dent in his bumper.
we exchanged insurance details so i have his, im hoping it'll just be a few hundred for a new bumper, all plastic,
other wise insurance will be taking care of it.

Contact your insurer for directions. That's what you pay them for.

Very little. People seem to think that reporting something to Gardaí makes it fact. Even getting them to the scene is relatively pointless. There's nothing they can really do there that can't be accomplished by taking a photo.
