Usually you pay then and there. They might not take credit cards. They charge varying rates. 50 is typical for basic consultation but it could be higher (I've known it to be as much as 80).

That would be down to the doctor. I would say it's unlikely if they don't know you though. If you can't afford to pay for a GP then you are likely to be eligible for a medical card, but that is not immediately helpful because you would not receive it right away.

If there's no one you are comfortable asking for a short term loan then you could ask in a bank about a short term loan. Doubt there would be a problem with a small amount. You won't be the only person who they'll have spoken to needing a small amount until their next payday etc.

OP, is there a walk in clinic anywhere near you? Chances are that would be cheaper. My GP is €50, but there's a walk in clinic nearby and they charge €30.

Try going into a chemist and speaking to a pharmacist.

You could try calling the doctor and explaining to them your situation.

If you've been a patient of them for years (even if you rarely consult with them) they might be happy to give you some time to drop in the money.

I know my own gp would definitely accommodate someone in this way if it was a genuine case.
