    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The whole co2 idea was green bullsh1t to start with.
While id like to see a push with making petrol engines more efficient, I hope it doesn't result in something like1.0L turbo being the only option across the board.

Not entirely correct. They have cheap tax on all cars over there. We never followed suit.

If petrol engined cars come to the fore again you can be absolutely sure that's what the Irish will buy....piddly little engines in poverty spec cars.

By the by I seen a brand spanking new 530i Beemer yesterday but it was NI reg obviously as you can imagine the panic caused if someone ordered one through an Irish dealer.

There should either be a larger allowance for CO2 emissions from petrol cars of say 20% or else there should be a diesel emission fee of €100 per diesel car per year lobbed on to motor tax.

Basically, as far as I see it - anyone who thought this style of initiative to reduce C02 was a good idea ( and didn't foresee the implications of encouraging a mass switchover to diesel in urban areas, the bigger picture ) has no scientific credibility.

Why does the gov ignore particulates coming from diesel engines? You can clearly see the sh. Ite coming out the back of a diesel car or bus... But the gov is obsessed with c02 and not my lungs.

Ban smoking coal outright while your at it. Smokeless peat was much cleaner burning, but that didn't suit the c02 brigade either

Because they drive 1.4 or smaller 5 speed petrol
And don't like diesel zooming past them with the puff of black smoke as it disappears in the distance.

    ??? meee-oww.

Unless yourself and jAMeS "sticky keys" DELAney are both environmentalists who believe this reduction in CO2 was worth the increase in genuinely harmful emissions I don't see the need for the butt hurt??

They're not gonna come in the dead of night, take your diesel, beat you around the place and send you to a gulag for owning one.

The majority of people who have done their sums will not be majorly inconvenienced day to day. 68mpg sounds like you are safe even if they bring taxes back to old "cc" system rates.

why cant they just make cars run on air or water, something that doesnt pollute the earth and is cheap to run?

Industry and governments have no interest in a fuel source that they can't profit from or tax.

It's as black and white as that.

Trouble is they dont get so much profits and tax from fuel anymore as cars get better MPG or less liters per 100 kilometers

So in 2018 all car sold in the EU will have in built in tracker .In theory it will call police and ambulance and fire brigade to scene of accident automatically even if the occupants are dead or unconscious.
In reality it is so the tracker will show where you go and tax you per mile
So even if they make the car run on ESB or water the leeches in the guvment will still get their tax.

The best advice is buy several cars in 2017 and avoid to ever buy a new car after 2018 as its not practical to retro fit the gizmo to older cars .They will will just pay normal toad tax instead for old cars.So for older cars it will be cheaper than the pay per mile tax added onto the normal road tax.

Retrofitting a tracker literally requires you to run 1 wire to the battery and 1 small wire to any point on the chassis. What makes you say it's not practical?

Retrofitting alarms and cruise control is hard. The difficulty of retrofitting a tracker is the same as wiring a bulb.

If the government fitted water metres then this will be a laugh.

One would logically assume that if the point is to track every journey, then the setup on new cars will be an integral part of the show and not easily disabled. Like the skyline that only gives full power if you are at a race track.

A 1 wire retrofit could just as easily be sitting in your shed, or be fitted with a switch, which doesn't really give the same functionality.

I saw recently that Ford are testing cylinder shut off .. on three cylinder engines :)
