Hi everyone, I am thinking of buying a 09 Renault Scenic 2 1.5 dci with 105,000k on the clock, everyone I have mentioned this to thinks I should not go near a Renault.

Its a well minded car with one owner from new, took it for a spin and was very happy with in, good root under the bonnet etc.

Is there any thing I should be looking out for as I have always driven Fords ?

    Bump,

Can anyone help with my query, seriously thinking of buying the car and some opinions would be useful

I would listen to "everyone" if I were you.
My other half had one and while it drove nicely enough it was a piece of 5hit.
The thing used to eat electric window motors or regulators for breakfast (three in six months), the main dealer didn't want to know but kindly offered to sell me replacements for about €300 a pop but warned me that they only came with a 12 month warranty...!
A relative had one but he only had two fail on him before he dumped it.
Also right at the very end the dash pod started to throw up some really weird fault messages for systems that weren't even installed on the car, the dealer told me it was a known problem so they would chip in approx €200 towards the new dash I'd be needing so I'd only have to pay €800....!
My next door neighbour was an auto electrician and he used to joke that Renault electrics paid for his extension on his house. As luck would have it he recently replaced all four damaged parts on another newer Renault a few weeks earlier and still had the old parts lying around, from these parts he was able get two of mine working long enough to be able to get rid of the car, the one in the back we just jammed closed with a piece of wood (if you bought one like that, it was me) then we traded it in for a Qashqai and never looked back.
So unless you live next door to an auto electrician don't even think about buying one, the car is rubbish, their customer service is rubbish....

The irony of that is that the Qashqai uses a huge number of Renault parts

Chances are there wasn't one Renault mention in the above post that was newer than 2005. As they are certainly not that bad now they don't even give window regulator trouble anymore. Once the scenic was minded and checks out I can't see you having any more issues with it than you would have with any of the comptetition.

Well he did ask for advice and I gave him advice based on my experience. It wasn't just the reliability that was an issue it was the complete lack of customer service, all our problems were known issues, there were Service Bulletins and warranty extensions on some of them, once those dates passed you were left on your own with crap quality.
I've had many cars over many years with not one single electric window failure, but three on one car...? The dealer then offering to sell me a replacement part for €300 which only came with a 12 month warranty...?
The whole experience put me off Renault, I don't care how much better their new cars are, they're not getting any more money off me....

All in all the Renault diesels are considered to be a better car than the petrol. A friend of mine has a Renault Scenic diesel, and she loves it. A sister of mine has a 1996 Renault Espace diesel, and she loves it to. There are other people I know how have Renault diesels, and they have no complaints. I always thought that I would never touch a Renault but with what I've heard about the Renault diesels, I'd certainly give a Laguna or a Scenic diesel a try.

We had no problems with the engine, but that's a common unit used in many cars and not built by Renault afaik.
It's their electrics and customer service that lets them down.....

I have a 10 reg Megane on loan from a garage at the minute and it wasn't exactly the most minded car ever. But every button, light, electric window electric mirror works exactly as it should. Not one thing doesn't work on the car. Early 2000's renaults caused a lot of electric trouble fair enough they did. But they don't anymore they are very very different cars to what they were.

    Buy a C-max instead.

Still cheaper than having to replace all your electric windows and your dashboard when the Renault Electrics gremlins start to appear, and well worth the money not having to deal with their Muppet Class Customer Service Division....
