We counted 43 swallows before they left us last year. 3 arrived back on the 7th of April. We are hoping more will return. However, it does seem that less are returning back each year. Does anyone have an idea as to why the numbers are reducing? Is the migration pattern changing? Are they dying as they migrate?

All bird species loose a high percentage of their young in the first year. Otherwise their numbers would grow too high.
You counted adults and young at the end of a good breeding season. Only a few early birds have arrived yet. It will improve through May hopefully.
