How long is this there?, only noticed it at the weekend. Great for identifying who you meet on a spin, and a fantastic time waster.
Should be funny for the Ring of Kerry!

Was wondering how I missed it.

Met an American who was on a cycling holiday out on a spin yesterday, he was going from Cork to Killarney. Chatted for a while. Neither of us mentioned Strava, but now thanks to flyby we can now stalk each other!

Been using it for ages, great for races, you can see where guys were pulling out more time than you, in my case it was when I was pulling myself out of a tree, who'd have thunk it!

If you hold the mouse over them it says what they are. one of them is the percentage of the route that was the same.

Click on the 'More Info' link at the bottom of the left hand column on the Flyby page.

had a look at this last night, went for a spin with a friend, we stopped for a few min at the halfway mark, I paused my GPS for the time, and I guess he didnt, from that time on it showed me further up the road than for for the whole trip home, even though we were never more than a few wheel lengths apart.

he had a correlation of 22, and the spacial was 95, with the same distance

I've noticed that if I view a FlyBy of a group ride, it often shows me as being a few hundred metres behind the rest or the group. And whereas it's true that I am out the back sometimes :D, it's not usually the case.

Since the GPS units have time-of-day synced to a zillionth of a second from the satellites, I can't see why the positions should be out of sync in this or the previous poster's case.

In any case it's a great feature.

The Strava flyby is stalking taken to a whole new level, it's awesome.

I wonder how Strava make enough money to stay going, items such as Flyby should maybe only be available to the premium members after a 10 day trial at freebie level, there is so much of the good stuff available for no payment that the incentive to join premium is basically altruism. And we don't live in a very altruistic world.

I would imagine the Garmin 520 which will have features only accessible to premium Strava subscribers (segment alerts etc.) will greatly increase the number subscribing. Strava are a surprisingly small operation and the key asset they have is the information that we all voluntarily upload that can be used for targeted marketing and tie ins with companies like Garmin so this is the way of the future I would imagine

I wouldn't be surprised to see it go that way, but at the moment Flyby (for example) is still part of their labs features, and thus a bit experimental, so may not be ready for prime time, and they don't want to charge until it is. Don't forget though, that they also seem to at least plug a fair bit of merchandise, so that may help also.

I'd imagine that once they reach a certain critical mass, they may begin charging as many, having enjoyed their service, will feel that they can't do without it. They probably sought significant capital investment to get it up and running and will need to honour that investment in the years to come.

Agreed. I enjoy using the service and enjoy the interface more than anything else I've used.

I decided to pay for premium membership because I felt that if there was a fee, I would pay it, so when one is optional, I almost felt guilty not paying!!

In the future, I wouldn't be surprised if they started going after some of the trainerroad etc market share and offering more interactive and 'live' turbo sessions. People who already use the service may be more likely to add/buy extra training services. Imagine your garmin syncing up a workout based on your power, speed, cadence etc and guiding you around your favourite segments... Yes it's already possible for some, but as power meter technology etc becomes more affordable, more people will seek simpler solutions on how to follow training plans which incorporate these new gadgets they've just bought!

Either way, fair play to them for making it as successful as they have.

You can share the links to. I wrote a report of a race I was at recently and I could select the riders and share the link so everyone could see it.

Strava are Facebook for cycling. They'll make money the way Facebook do selling your data. Targeted advertisements & premium features.
