A career in cloud computing?

    Hi all,

I'm currently in tech support(desktop) and have been for the last 15 years. I'm in my late thirties and feel like my job has gone stale and I've reached my salary ceiling and without going into server support I won't be able to earn more. The thing is I feel I've lost interest in support.

I'm considering going into Cloud computing. Can anyone recommend what certification I should be looking for? Courses etc?

Are there any boardies in cloud computing and how do you find it?
    Is it interesting?
Is there good money to be made?
I would imagine this industry is only going to grow so it would be good for me to get into.

I was also considering going into IT security and getting some CISSP certification etc. Would this be a better option, I know nothing about the security industry though :( Any feedback is appreciated thanks :)

What exactly do you mean by 'Cloud computing'? What aspect of it do you want to work in?
Cloud is such a buzz word now but what you have said is basically like somebody saying I want to work with computers.

Fair point mate, I was being a bit general :) Probably supporting cloud based services. I'm not 100% knowledgible in this area so I was hoping some other boardies could advise me. I've seen jobs advertised such as Cloud development engineer/Cloud operation expert.

Whoever coined the term 'Cloud' has cursed us IT people. It is essentially hardware support. Servers and storage Arrays. Lots of virtualization.

The jobs you are mentioning would be VMware, Unix/Linux sys admins and Coders. There is no such thing really as Hardware support when you move into this territory as a lot of the time the vendors of the hardware will support the infrastructure.

Unfortunately its one of these things you just have to 'fall' into if the company you are working for decide they want to go down that route.

For security, the popular things at the moment are Fortinets and Palo Altos, both of which you can get a lot of info on online.

There are also courses offered by Amazon for AWS specific stuff - dont know much about them, but if I were a business heavily invested in AWS stuff [of which there are many] I would rank that higher than many "generic" college/uni/professional courses...

Focus on either AWS or Azure (or ideally both). With AWS you can set up an account and play/learn using the free tier options for 12 months. (Azure probably has something similar). If you want to get some certificates on your CV get the 'AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner' and from there get your 'AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate' but use your free account to really understand the basics.
