The best of us our higher self is better. We don't operate on that level all the time.

A good question. I suppose though, the corollary is things aren't worse. And they used to be. We're not an honours civilization, but we'd earn a respectable pass. "Could do better. Need to focus"

    :)

Things are grand. Your head isn't in danger of being chopped off and you've no danger of starving in the streets so enjoy it.

Because it much easier to break than to build..... and all it needs is a few bad apples to ruin things for the rest of us.

Potential is something we are working towards. You can change at anytime.

I always say I forgive if you treat the next person better. I forgive myself if I intend to genuinely be better. If people mean to do better let it go.

There are few things you can't change from. Rape , murder etc. You can't really be a genuine person and simply say I will not murder the next person and think that equates to being good. Taking stock of something so VERY serious requires something so profound that maybe it can't be done.

    Why are we not better?

No why am I not better? I will ask it and answer. Why have I not done what I could have and what I should have in my life?

I was perhaps operating from the part of myself that was in pain. I was deluding myself for a moment that I could outrun my conscience.

I have a sieve like memory for things I have done that are bad. Which in and of itself ...is bad.

Self preservation? A fear that we are small in the world and we need to be extra fierce.

I am flawed being. There is none so stupid as all of us. :-)

We are the humans. We suck.

But we can sometimes be awesome.

To err is human to forgive is divine.

We are the worst of us.

    Are we?

    I'm confused.

See if I say I am gooder than you it kinda means I'm not.:)

Nah, see that's the problem; people are afraid to judge. But there are plenty of people who are a waste of time and hold us back. They just never get called on it.

    So why arent things better?

Because there's a lack of blood sacrifice to the gods.

    So why arent things better?

In general as a human race?

I would say, an inability to put yourself in someone else's shoes, lack of understanding, lack of empathy?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

We aren't better, because people are uninterested in the things - politics/economics - that need to change to make us better.

We cede control/knowledge over 'boring' topics like these, to those who want power - and it's our (collective) ignorance and disinterest which keeps us from making positive change there.

Talk to people about easily understood societal issues, like abortion/LGBT/gender-rights, and other similar issues which people come in direct contact with, and there are plenty who are knowledgeable and active/interested in positive change there.
Talk to people about more messy/complex and abstract issues that relate to politics and economics, and people just switch off as soon as it starts getting complicated or heated; this is 'left to the experts' - experts who by and large are selected just to defend the political/economic status quo, i.e. defend whoever has power and their interests - which is what happens when the public cedes interest/control over certain political/economic topics.

So, if we want to all be better, we have to start giving a shít and learning about these more complex/'boring' topics, and be informed on what needs to change, before we can be active in making a difference :)
I think that's extraordinarily unlikely to happen though, unless things get much worse - which is a pity.

Too many of us think we are dancers, not realizing we are the dance.

A puzzle to me. I mean the majority here are progressive, right thinking modern secularists who by their constant intonations of the praise of rationality would do Robespierre proud. We should be living in a moral paradise if such were the measure of how a moral community operates. Unless of course there is a worm in the paradise of the new Utopia on earth.
    I blame Emmanuel Goldstein.

I blame Father Ted and the introduction of divorce. That's when people started thinking for themselves and the church started looking a bit iffy and its all been crap ever since.

Well it's not like things were great when Ireland was in the grip of the church either.

Lack of live-and-let-live - from all quarters... is why things aren't better, IMO.
