I was coming in at about 9 .15 this evening and was amazed by how many bats were zipping around - is this a particularly good time of year to see them ? Any one else notice this ?

The weather has been very mixed for bats this year. Very warm, then really cold, then warm days followed by cold nights

Would the bats not come out on cold nights at this time of year? I could hear them flying around a few weeks ago but there was a few nights that I couldn't see or hear them.

I used to see them coming in to the attic at dawn last year but not yet this year.

Its a great sight to see them circling the chimney around dawn. At least thats what it looks like to me. Looks like they are taking turns to get in.

Just counted 42 bats coming out from under the ridge tiles near the chimney.

Well, around sunset is always the best time to see any kind of bats.

Bats won't usually bother being out on the wing unless there's enough of their insect food on the wing... and the insects don't like it cold. So on very cold nights, even in late spring / early summer, there will be few, if any, bats out and about.
