hi hopping for a bit of advice I Owen a 00 Clio last week we had to replace gearbox and also a new clutch , so today I was driving and noticed that the the tempreture gauge was reading nearly to the top so I checked the coolant level and it was very low , so I bought a bottle and topped it up today so now I'm after driving for 15 mins max and checked the coolant again and for some reason it's bubbling hot and overflowing . I'm trying to explain the best I can as I don't know much about cars . Would anybody have a idea of what could be wrong ?? And the best way to fix it please and thank you .

Could be a stuck thermostat or else your water pump needs replacing

Check for leaks damaged hose or leak in radiator
don't for get the heater matrix as it's all part of coolant system.

Would there be any way for me to check if the thermostat is stuck? Thanks

I had a look there and there doesn't seem to be any leaks it just seems to bubble up when the thermostat passes over half way.

Yes, let engine heat up and feel both top and bottom hoses from rad to engine block. If both get hot the thermostat is

and is ok. If only one gets hot and temp needle rises too high then thermostat is bad

When u let the car heat up it the coolant bottle looks and sounds like a kettle of water boiling up and trying to escape.

Sounds to me like the water pump is not circulating the coolant. The coolant is therefore not getting a chance to cool down thru the rad and is boiling off as you describe thru the pressure release on the expansion bottle

What would you recommend I do next?? Would it be expensive to replace the water pump?? Thanks and sorry for all the questions

Not sure of the exact set up of your particular engine but could involve removing timing belt to get at the water pump. Best to get a mechanic to look at it. Let us know how you get on

Just reading through your post OP and from the information given another option is the head gasket. It would fit all the symptoms listed.

Just reading through your post OP and from the information given another option is the head gasket. It would fit all the symptoms listed.

I second that head gasket where the gasket only breaks letting hot exhaust enter the water and heats it up .

There is some chemical kit available online that can test for unburnt fuels from exhaust gas from water in radiator . Car shops might sell the kit as well

Larger garages can sometimes have a electronic sniffer to check that type of problem. Sometimes if you leave the water cap off you can smell and see the unburnt fuel exit the radiator and that tells you its head gasket .

The problem is after you fix the head gasket the thing is the car can still boil over .
The extra hot water from the overheating events can melt away all the lubricating oil on the bearing for the water pump . Then you get water pump failure at the same time as head gasket problem .

Is there any squeaking noises from the engine that would suggest the bearing on the water pump is shot .

    Jed
