    Have you tried a broker?

Is she on a permit with no ncb? If so insurance will be very high

Does she need to have her own car?

She has her own car ,it s NCT'd till jan 2016,she has tried brokers, she's got her provisional.Have heard of a few people this year who's insurance premiums have shot up for no apparent reason. Can't understand it myself.

Can you not get the car in your name and add her to the policy?

This wouldn't be a bad idea given that she cannot use the car without the company of a full licenced driver.

Your daughter is high risk and any premium she gets is going to be through the roof.

She would be better served building experience as a named driver.

If this isn't an option, consider what Stheno has said and employ the services of a few different brokers and see what they come back with.

Her best bet might be to build up a couple of years as a named driver on someone else's car and pass her test

If she doesn't need her own car that's the way to do it

    Have you got a licence?

If so, you could insure the vehicle and name her on it for a fraction of the cost and accompany your daughter whilst she is driving.

probably best to buy the car and insure it after you pass the test. Not surprised insurance quotes are so high for someone on a provisional, 18 and no years experience.

There is an apparent reason. Most insurers are either losing money or haven't kept enough reserves aside, plus there has been a large increase in claims hence industry wide increases (not just car insurance). It's been very well publicised.

On topic, get at least a years named driver experience and pass the test as a previous poster mentioned. It will make a big difference.

Go to FirstIreland and ask for Asgard/Lloyds policies... I was 22 getting my first 1.4 Mazda from '00 (2 years ago), didn't have a full license and paid a little over €1000. After I got the full license I think it was reduced by €200 or so.
Great guys, include basic cover and also Home Recovery Service which I used for free twice now.

Changed a car to 1.6 Audi in the meantime and pay a little less again, think about €900 now, with full license. Not bad!

But sticking another 400 on it from the quote she got a couple of weeks ago seems a bit rich.

Thanks to EU Equality Legislation. She is now getting the same rate as an 18 yr old Hardy Buck

That's the way they work I'm afraid, I remember insuring my first car when I was 18 , a 1.1 Rover Metro and I paid €4,300 a year, absolute mad money but it doesn't come down until you pass your test and start building up your own NCB.

Only advice I can give is go online and make a list of every known insurer, then spend an afternoon getting quotes from all of them and take the best of a bad bunch of quotes.

Also, for your daughter be very careful driving without a full licence driver in the car on a learners permit. Gardai are cracking down on this and will dish out penalty points if stopped, worst yet if she has an accident the insurance company won't pay out and she will be liable for repairs/personal injury to third party costs which can potentially bankrupt a teenager or put them in serious trouble for years to come.

    Best of luck.

How did this work, did insurance come down for male drivers and go up for females?

Official answers is that premiums were averaged out, reality is that female rates went up towards the male rates in the high risk categories (under 25s)

The insurers do adjust their ratings every month so, unfortunately, it does happen. Just as likely it could be €400 less another few weeks later.

Nope; the requirement was that gender could not be a base for quote disparity so everyone were moved to one group based on age and the highest risk was taken (which tends to be male drivers) at each age group. This meant male rates remained the same and female rates went up.
