"Puppy" needs a name

Around three years ago one of my dogs (now deceased) went in pup unknown to us. We had no plans on keeping any of the pups and gave them away however we had no takers for one. A female who was very nervous of people for some reason. And still is. She will literally come to no one but my father or me and is very distrusting in general. She ended up staying with us as we grew attached (as you do)!

    Any way....

As we had planned on keeping none, she never got a name! We started calling her "puppy" and still do! She even answers to this name!

    1) Can I change her name now or would that be too traumatic for her?? I feel puppy is too impersonal for the little lady (and she is far from a pup now).

    2) If so.....any ideas?

Well you can't keep calling it puppy after it grows up.

    Call it 'dog'.

Nah, just keep Puppy. It's actually not a bad name. Better than Trigger.

Seems like if the dog/puppy has no problem with their name and they identify with it, then changing it is a completely superfluous action you're taking only to humour yourself

Call him " help" or " rape"
So when your dog is walking around you can just help or rape just to confuse people

I'm a big fan of giving dogs human names; particularly "old man" type names like Eric, Stan or Wilf.

Poppy is the most straight forward name to call her, pup won't notice the difference.

We had to do that with our dog when we were kids, I have two siblings, all of us had strong feelings on what she should be named and by the time (a couple of weeks maybe) we'd reached an agreement on the name she was answering to Puppy.

Such a cute little pup, I think it suits her, I'd agree with the other poster that poppy would be best similar to her name or Polly ?

My dog isn't a puppy. I call her puppy. Even though her name is not puppy.

I call her puppsicles a lot too.

She doesn't know 'Puppy' isn't a name. If it's really bothering you just call her Poppy.

And no, they generally have no bother with changes of name. Say the new name and give her a treat and in a couple of days she'll answer to in grand.

What if the other dogs tease her over not having a "proper" name?

If I had known what sort of a character my lad turned out to be, I would have called him Nidge

Puppy is cute. Don't change it.

I refer to most dogs as "woofins".

    LOOK AT THE WOOFINS!

And then you roll around on the floor with them like a giant four year old. It works particularly well if said dog is big, like a labrador or some such breed.

    Man, dogs are awesome.

Bongo maybe, I always wanted to call my dog bongo. They have all been rescues lately and couldn't bring myself to rename them.

Your puppy looks like an unfinished painting.

    I'd call her Sketch.

We have a cat called "Cat", she was originally called Thor but we found she took to "Cat" much better.

    That's the joke.

Although I want to know what their cows name is...you can clearly make out the shadow in the first pic.

My dog has about six different names. It probably depends on breed, but she very quickly picks up new nicknames when coined (Labrador)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,797 ✭✭✭✭hatrickpatrick

Also I have strong evidence that dogs understand the concept of names and not just that name = come - if my mum says "Where's Paddy/Patrick?" to my dog she'll come looking for me, same with other members of my family.

after three years you've never given the dog a proper name?

My dog is 10 and has a few names... one main name... and a few other silly ones... we call him "pup".. even when he is 15 he will always be know as pup...

age is but just a number

    :pac:

    Yup.
My boyfriends sister has a springer who knows everybody in her family's name. If she comes looking to be fed/let out/whatever, and you say "go ask Michael/Alan/Sinead etc.", she'll go beg to that person.
