I've a job offer with an engineering consultancy that have included a 2 year non-competition clause in the contract - this seems a little excessive, no?

Is this standard now and if so what is the usual period?

    Thanks

It depends. Its a very complicated legal area and it may not be enforceable if signed. Given that if it is enforceable it means two years of your life I would consult with a legal professional prior to signing.

If you give more details I may be able to shed some general light on the matter.

Such clauses are usually not an issue as long as the key specifics are defined. E.g. it may make sense (and even be fair) to have language which prevents you competing with respect to certain accounts which the consultancy company holds , but it would not be reasonable to prevent you from working completely in the industry for 2 years. Such clauses can usually be written in such a way that both parties are satisfied.

Thanks lads, sorry for the slow reply. Didn't sign the contract with the competition clause and started with them anyway at the beginning of June.
