EML on can mean anything. You need to get codes read.
Who told you it was the temp sensor? The seller? If so, what did they base that on?
Anyway, best get codes read and get a mech to check car out before handing any dosh over.

If it was a cheap fix then why didn't the seller just fix it?

The fault code would need to be scanned to determine what it is otherwise it could be anything really.

That sort of ****e is almost as annoying as "no test but she'll fly through it". So test the fcking thing then

Then it's probably correct but have your own mech check it out anyway.

You would want to get the codes read, then take it for a 15/20 mile drive under rather heavy driving and see if the engine light comes on again and then read the fault codes.

    adding 2 + 2 + 2 together here.

    1. seller said just came on this evening.

    2. his mechanic whom i spoke to afterwards said it passed the test with it on.

    3. noticed oil spilled around where the oil goes in.

so guess it could be an oil burning issue, guess spillage could be a give away there.starvation and/or overfill. car was hot when i got there and there was slight overfill when i checked the level.

steer clear or get it checked and if the answer is get it checked is it enough to have the codes read?

So it came on, the mech had tome to look at it and say it was a sensor, and then seller had time to NCT it? All in a day?
It could be true but never trust someone selling you something. They just want your money.

It's not a fail on NCT (for petrol cars). It doesn't means it not a concern.

Could just be from a service, some oil spilled onto engine and not cleaned off.

Take it to a mechanic before you hand over any money.

Mechanics are there to protect people that don't know cars vary well from buying bad cars, use that knowledge.
If mech wants to do a bit more than read code then that's fine. Better spend 100 on the car now than buying it only to spend 1000 later.
