Gsr lancer. I'm going saving up for one, hoping to have it in 6 months. I'm a 24 yo male with a provisional but I'll surely have the test passed by then. I had 2 points but I haven't drove in 2 years so I think they may be gone by now. Do I have any hope?? :pac:

    Honestly, probably not.

    Honestly, probably not.

Well I'd be 25 then with a full license hopefully. I wouldn't go insuring it as a 1.6 or anything. I suppose the only way I'll know is if I rang up and got a quote

Why not try getting a quote either online or via a phone call? Insurance companies are really the only ones who can answer this. I'd imagine at least one of them will cover you but how much it will cost only an insurance company can answer.

Ya that's true , I tried getting an online quote but it couldn't do it. That's a definite no anyway. But that's with the provisional aswel

    Numerous things against you.

    1. Penalty points- they remain in your licence for 3 years.
    2. You'll be a novice driver with no experience over the last 2 years.
    3. You'll have no NCB
    4. Your a young male driver looking to insure a Japanese imported performance car.

Only the insurance companies can tell you for difference, you may get a quote but it'll be very very expensive but my guess is no one will want to cover you.

i did insure one when i was 24, it was almost ten years ago though, at that i had full licence since 18, and by then had 3yrs NCD in my own name, it cost me over 2.5k at the time, and I think the company only gave me a quote becuase I had house insurance and a commercial vehicle policy all with them at the time.

if you can even get a quote that good now will probably be worth as much as the car!?, so will have to save up for twice as long!

i cant see someone who just passed their test and with no NCD having much hope to be honest though

Better get the idea out of my head so for another few years. I would have more of a chance with a gt starlet or sir civic or something??

I am open to correction on this, but I have believe point now stay on a license for 3 years.
You may find it incredibly difficult. My sister had trouble get a quote on a standard 1.4 litre golf, and she was 25 a the time on her provisional. When she did get a quote, the figure was in the thousands.

If it was me I would get some 1 litre bog standard car and drive it for 2 years to build up a nice NCB and then I would go a bit mad and get something. You will be a little older and a little wiser and the points will be gone, at the minute if you can get cover I would say it would be in the 3 grand plus area.

+1 there. You won't be getting cheap insurance on anything decent. Get yourself an old starlet, stick some walmart, hasbro and sorny stickers all over the windows, take a pickaxe to the body work for some "speed holes", prikstik on some massive spoiler from fleabay and tippex the branded triangle tyres. It'll be massive lookin'.

I'm 25 with 8 years no claims and no points and i'm looking at over €1k on a glanza. It's gone incredibly difficult to insure jap imports at all.

I also thought that peno points lasted for 3 yrs.

Op, you face a hard battle to get insurance for that car. Did you try any of the smaller cars when you applied online?

Glanzas and turbo starlets have a bad name tho. I was insured in a gt when I was 20 but it was down as a non turbo

The points could have been nearly 3 years by now tho tbh. Ya I tried a levin and corolla but it wouldnt give me a quote on any. Thinking of saving for a levin now instead , no turbo so id have some chance

I taught about doing that but I just wouldnt get any enjoyment out of a car like that tbh. I can insure the mothers yaris now under her name but I wouldnt gain any NCB if im name driver would I?

Can you get insurance? More than likely.

Can you afford it? That only you can answer yourself.

Ring round and ask is my 2 pence

Go onto various insurance comparison sites and enter all your details but out in that you have a full licence and see if you can get a quote. I doubt you'll get quoted on anything Japanese import as they're getting very difficult to insure. I have 20 yrs driving experience, 20 years NCB, no penalty points, no convictions ever and even I find it difficult to find companies to quote me. You will find it near impossible but you may as well try but expect to pay a big premium with a large excess figure.

Sure isnt that one of the reasons why they had a bad name , people were not being honest with the insurance companys, 1.3 turbo down as 1.3 on logbook.

Honestly the NCB will be your downfall, get yourself a 1.3 corolla or something small until those penalty points drop off and you can get 2/3 NCB under your belt.

I was 24 and insured a 1.6 corolla with a crash, it cost me over 2.5k.

    And GSR Lancers dont?

It'l be prohibitively expensive in the best case scenario to try insure a high performance jap import with a provisional, sfa experience and points.

You haven't a hope OP. Some of the main insurers for young drivers (Liberty and Axa, at this moment in time) would quote you a high premium despite your age, licence type and NCB level.

However, the japanese import / make and model scenario just throws all of that out of the window.

The gsr was a bit crazy alrite lol but im not giving up hope on the levin just yet. Il be applying for the test tonight . Its 85 euro isnt it?

Be wary insurance wise of the levins. The reason i say that is insurance companys seem to be loading cars that are 20 years old.
The last of them came out in 99/2000 ,
You need to get quotes for normal cars 1.3/1.4 carolla/golf and see what they are like and ring up and get quotes for levin/glanza .
    You will get some shock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭neasyerac

You could try 25plus, Once you hit that age. I find them much cheaper, specially for Jap imports. Though having no NCB and prov licence will definitely add zero's to the price.

I wouldnt mind paying about 2.5k to insure a levin tbh but il get some quotes next week just to see anyway

its always been incredibly difficult to insure jap imports and i dont think it'll ever change,i'm 35 with a full ncb (16 years) and drive an imported evo which i've owned nearly 8 years now and i still pay a high premuim, even at my age most companies still dont want to know.

How about a GT TDI golf , are they easy enough to insure ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,088 ✭✭✭aaakev

I had my GSR wjen i was 19-21, full licence not long after my 17th birthday and 2 years ncb on a 1.5 mazda mx3. I was paying around the 2k mark iirc. That too was about 10 years ago. I can honestly say it was probably the most fun car iv ever had!

    OP
Pick 2 or 3 cars that you are very interested in. Contact at least 5 insurance companies and brokers and explain that you are looking to purchase a car and you have these 2 or 3 in mind and you just want an idea on price before buying the car. Tell them that you have just passed the test and have no experience built up.

This will give you some idea on prices if they insure you on the cars your interested in. As far as I know some insurance companies take into account no claims built up as a named driver they used to but that could have changed but by ringing around you will find out exactly.

No how many times in this thread do you have to be told to start with a smaller car and build up some ncb and then go looking for bigger?

How many more times will people come onto boards asking for prices for their car insurance instead of phoning an insurance company, a broker or using the insurance companies on line enquiry.
