Scrapped Cars and VRT

    Hi Guys,

So I scrapped my beloved 2003 fiesta last week. The thought has occurred to me that I might be able to claim VRT back on the car as it no longer on the road. I couldn't find any information online about this that was in any way clear. Everything seems to point at the old VRT rebate off a new car on the old scrappage scheme, nothing for voluntarily scrapping a car.

It was done through an authorised car dismantler in the UK as I had driven it over there with a car load of stuff and the clutch was about to go. Wasn't going to risk driving the car back on a dodgy clutch so scrapped it and got a couple hundred for it with a COD.

No the export VRT refund only applies to cars exported which then get reregistered in the country they are exported to. If the reregisted it, provided you with the proof and then at a later date scrapped it then yes you would get a VRT refund.

Even if the cert of destruction from the uk was enough to allow a vrt refund, they only refund the normal vrt figure less 500 so in the case of an old fiesta, that would leave you with little or no refund anyway.
