Two and three-time Irish Olympians Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes
Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics following a tense and dramatic night for Irish boxing in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) in Maiquetía, Venezuela in the early hours of this morning.
Barnes beat Finol Rivas on a split decision (49-45,49-45, 47-48) in the light-fly class in to book his ticket for the 31st Olympiad and Conlan beat Jose Diaz 49-46 across the board on a unanimous...

What way did Conlon qualify for this? I'm not sure how the points are added up.

    seems a very complicated system

Conlon on form will be a hard match for anyone in Rio

BTW, I didn't think Ramirez easily dismantled Conlon in 2012...Beat him in a very competitive fight.

I went and watched that fight again. Dismantling my ar%e. Conlon did very well, and was not given a lot of scores for a lot of good body work. The count he received in rd 3 was funny. Ramirez landed maybe two light/glancing enough shots and the ref jumped in for the standing 8. I remember when watching it live that it was very close and that Conlon wasn't given any real credit from the Irish. He boxed superb and more than held his own.

You're right, dismantling was probably too strong a word to use there. However that Cuban had the perfect point scoring style and any aggression from Conlon was all on the gloves and arms.He was just too cute and too quick for Conlon, coupled with the fact that he was only 18, he's some talent.

And plenty of Ramirez' shots fell short and hit arms and gloves.

Kinda disconcerting to read that Conlon was considering not turning up for his fight the other night with the plan of turning pro. I like Conlon, thought he looked very good in the Commonwealths but his last few performances in the wsb have been so-so.He was hampered with injury last year and may be some explanation to his performances. However, the thoughts of him considering going pro puts questions in my mind weather he has the hunger to do better than he did in London.

Sometimes you got to strike when the iron is hot which Quigley and Nevin done by turning pro after their successes in the Worlds and Europeans respectively. Does the potential of Conlon being knocked out in the last 16 of the Olympics make him less marketable than his status today?

Look who he is going to be up against in that division. Ramírez was Cuba's best boxer in London and easily dismantled Conlon in the semi's, the Russian has looked really good in the WSB so far and beat Conlon in the Europeans. Not sure what the craic is with Selby is but he always got one over on Conlon.

It's going to be tough for him but I guess you could say that about any boxers journey in the Olympics. It's just these pro thoughts don't sit easy with me as it lacks focus on the goal in hand.

He genuinely thought he was out so he'd flown to Venezuela for nothing. He thought once Nikitin won it was over. Had to be told that the Azeri could still lose, he'd win and he'd be through. Like the rest of us he found it confusing.

Hunger? Takes plenty of that to go through what he has. It's the last thing I'd question tbh.
