So, for those of you who didn't know; the ncts recently required any online bookings to be secured with card details. The same requirement was not necessary for phone bookings.

A second problem is the ability to book in any car, as long as you know the owners name, address and car registration number. So, if you really don't get along with your neighbours, you can hit them with nct penalties by booking their cars in.

After a number of emails with the ncts, there has been a breakthrough on the first point. Card details, are no longer required to secure a booking online. They have reintroduced the security feature, where the vehicle date of first registration is required. The phone booking system seems to be still open for abuse though.

I haven't tested the online booking process since I received the last email, so if anyone has booked their car in online, since April 3rd, can you confirm that you did not need to enter card details for the booking to be accepted?

I am hoping they fix the error, where anyone can book in a car once they know the owner name and address.

They say it's about improving efficiency and cutting down no-shows, which seems pointless, because a penalty is slapped onto a car the next time it is presented. I suggested a discount, or even an entry to a monthly prize draw be introduced for anyone willing to pay online, or in advance.

I'm glad something has been done, but there is still a security issue that they really need to fix.

I've booked several cars in over the last fortnight (most recent being yesterday) and have needed to enter card details each time.

I passed my NCT on 27th January, and used the system you described(booked online with no card, but with date of first reg),so its not a new system.

I booked an NCT last week. As soon as I put in the reg number, my name & address & car details came up. Then I picked a date, then I needed credit/debit card which I didn't have with me on the occasion, so straight to the phone & confirmed my booking. The lady never mentioned payment. I asked a friend since, who only booked a couple of weeks earlier & he didn't need card payment on booking. So I dont know whats going on!!

That was January. They changed their booking procedure after that. Goz is asking if the newer online system has reverted back to the older procedure.

Well,if he'd made it clear how far back 'recently' referred to!

...and if you had read the two posts above your's, you might have seen how 'recent' he was referring to.

But they both directly contradict him!
