    Hi guys,

I am starting a jobbridge internship next monday in Dublin. I usually collect my jobseekers allowance on Tuesday, which I can't be collecting when I am on the internship as I live in portlaoise and by the time, I reach portlaoise, the post office will be closed. I have given my social welfare local office my bank details, but the lady in the local office told me that it would take atleast 3 weeks for the money to come straight into my account. Does anybody know what I can do? Thanks :)

As far as I know the additional €50 takes 3 weeks to come through but the normal payment amt will go straight into your bank account week one. no more need to go to the PO !

Seeing that it takes three weeks for the additional €50 to add to account... Is that backdated ? €150 for the three weeks back-dated ?.

If not it should be. Also... see what you are entitled to regarding travel expenses from the DSP.

Folk should have enough of a wage/income to pay for... rent/bills/food/travel expenses/water/tv license/clothes/footware/ and other house-hold necessities.

Thats new to me regarding the travel expenses. I cant seem to find any information regarding travel expenses. Do I enquire my local social welfare office about this?

You will get an allowance equivalent to your current social welfare payment and you will get an internship allowance of €50 per week. You will also keep any secondary benefits that you have when you take up an internship. If you are signing for credits you will get €50 per week. No top-up payments from the host organisation are permitted, but interns may be reimbursed for expenses incurred during the internship.

The most appropriate way of finding out exactly what you are entitled to, is to take a trip to your nearest Citizens Information Centre and they will explain to you - your entitlements regarding jobsbridge and travel expenses.

Not many folk bother to see these people for information, but they should. As professionals with information is invaluable.

All FAQ's are here as follows... 'but of course it doesn't mention travel expenses', so you need to seek information from the Citizens Advice Bureau, as you should be entitled to 'some' travel expenses. Definitely check-up on it though.

Yes it is backdated. The additional €50 is given as a flat rate only for travel costs etc.

The travel costs referred to on the citizens information site are in relation to what the host organisation can pay you. Social welfare give the additional 50, the host organisation can't "pay" you anything on top of that but they can pay travel or lunch costs.

Also, usually they pay your jobseekers allowance through the post office as usual until the full amount (JA plus 50 top up plus arrears) into your account. You're entitled to time off for interviews/meetings with social welfare so getting off a little earlier than usual in order to collect your payment from the post office would fall into this seeing as its just an initial transitional problem. Speak to your host organisation, explain the issue and ask if its a possibility.

The payment method remains the same unless you specifically request it until the additional payment comes in after approx 3 weeks. If you cannot collect it the payment day in the Post Office can be changed or you can be paid by cheque. Contact the Branch Office in Portlaoise. The email is bo.plaoise@welfare.ie and discuss which option is best. There are no additional payments available from DSP but as mentioned above you can receive a payment to cover travel and/or lunch expenses at the discretion of the host organisation.
