No sons old mobile phone has died, not worth fixing.Looking for a recommendation for a replacement of new or second hand, only trouble with new is will be sim locked and he currently has a vodafone sim but could move to another network. ,Also are there any pay as you go packages providers now where you just top up with say €10 or €20 euro and use it untill its gone rather that having to top up every month with €10/€20 as he will only use it for calls and text occassionally so dont want to be shelling out every month.

Tesco Mobile you can top up just when you need to and the credit lasts (I think) 2 years.

You can buy sim-free (i.e. unlocked) phones from Argos, Amazon etc - the Moto E is a good cheapish option if he wants a smartphone.
