Can anybody recommend any insurance companies that would be alright for first time drivers? I have booked my theory test today and will be 17 in june. I'm determined to get driving as soon as possible. I have bought my brothers old car, a 1999 seat Toledo 1.9 TDI 90bhp. All the quotes I have been getting are from 3500 euro upwards.

Ring around the insurances companies.....all of them. Don't do online quotes. There is no quick or easy way to get cheap car insurance at your age.

Consider getting a less powerful car with a 1.1 or 1.2lt engine. A 1.9 lt engine puts you in the boy racer/high risk category, which automatically leads to higher premiums, given your age.

Thanks for your reply. I know it seems a powerful car for my age but I got the car for a few hundred off my older brother. And I don't really have the cash to buy another. And the car is fairly beat up so it would be hard enough to sell on. If I got a quote for 2500 I would take it like a shot. I got a few quotes of boxymo but after all the reviews I read about them I don't really want to go with them

The insurance companies don't know or care that the car is beat up. Once the specs are what they are, you automatically go into the quote range for that car. It's great that you got a car that cheaply, due to your brother giving you a good deal. But if you are insuring that car, for the next several years, you'll wind up paying far more overall, than if you had a less high risk (from the insurances companies point of view) car. I get that you want to get going as soon as possible, but if you stick with that car, it could turn out to be a very false economy in the long run.
