    Hi,

I'm having problems ever since I got Eircom out to fix an issue with my NTU.

They have been back 4 times already and now there is another problem.

Basically, when a call is connected on the landine the upstream SNR margin drops to zero and the router ends up rebooting itself.

The technician said he separated the cables - we have an alarm with a dialler that sends a SMS down the phone line but this is filtered.

Its seems that the phone line is using the same line as the routerbut its strange that only the upstream SNR drops when a call is made.

At this stage I am losing faith in getting Eircom to rectify the issue so is there any experienced KN installer our there who would be willing to help and tell me the cost of a call out for a nixer - feel free to PM me.

Have they removed the alarm to eliminate that as an issue?
This text service will be gone in a couple of months anyway.

Theres specific pins for everything on the back of the front portion of the NTU. If theyve attached it correctly then it shouldnt allow voice spectrum noise out to the modem. So either they've wired it wrong or the alarm is totally shorting the line out and nuking the US tones before they leave the house.

    See here:
    http://www.reci.ie/Portals/0/Documents/eircominterface.pdf
Wiring to Alarm systems and ISDN lines are terminated on IDC blocks using the normal IDC
terminating tool. A number of zero ohm resistor straps shall be removed as required. The
wiring to the alarm control panel must be connected to the red IDC block. This is marked 'in'
and 'out'. The wiring to the alarm unit is terminated on the connection points marked 'in' and
the wiring from the alarm unit is terminated on the connections marked 'out'. The two resistor
straps marked AL must be disconnected to complete the circuit.
The alarm unit is now connected and it will over ride the use of the PSTN socket in the event
of alarm activation. Please note that a faulty alarm unit may cause PSTN service to fail on the
    front socket outlet.

Five minutes with a screwdriver will tell you if the blocks are populated and resistors pulled.

The other scenario is the alarm is wired to the drop further back, if thats the case you really need to get that wired correctly.

Or just, ya know, get a cellular based alarm ;)
