    Hi,

Sorry if this has been posted before.

l recently started new job after spending 13 years in my old one. I got 1st pay packet last week and got emergency tax which I expected as l had not handed in P45 yet. I handed it in start of this week, so I was just wondering how long does it take for the P45 to "register" and emergency tax to cease?

    Thanks in advance.

it should be sorted by the next pay packet. You can help speed things up by ringing revenue and giving them your new employer's registered number and requesting your credits/allowances are reassigned to new employer

Would you know if the employer sorts out refunding the emergency tax that you have paid due to the delay? I.e. Will he see his overpayment refunded in the next pay cheque?

    Generally yes

No point in expecting an employer to sort out your tax credits ..
You and you alone is responsible for your tax affairs .

An employer can only input the most recent info available to them .

Its up to you to give them proper details , via tax office etc

Emergency tax will probably take 4 weeks,
there will be no tax credits given and tax is paid at the higher rate,
regardless of the level of pay.
