So got a quote to get a few bits done in our new home. Install 4 or 5 new elec sockets, move 3 others, replace light switches from plastic to chrome 9 in total, to put in a few extra light in hallway, lights out the back and move gas timer. Im surprised bigtime by the cost. Anyone have an idea on how much this should cost including materials? Obviously I know you would need to see the house but its a 3 bed detached bungalow.
    Thanks for your help.

Install new sockets? Do you mean replace old ones with new ones? Or install and run wires to them? Move gas timer to where and how far? Whose supplying the new lights?

Thanks for repkies. Run new wires and install new sockets. They are supplying the lights. Its actually 3 lights in hall and 2 outdoor lights. They are supplying materials. Moving timer about ten feet to another room.

So how much were you quoted?

400 for materials and 800 for the work. I thought would be under 1k. And im not sure if vat is added to that!

All depends on the type of fittings, brushed chrome light switches can be about 13 Euro each sockets are dearer again, lights in the hall , if you want LED downlighters including the fitting there about 15-18 Euro each to buy, and with regards installing new sockets, all depends on the finish do you want the cables buried in the wall, is the wall poster board, or concrete, this all effects how Labour intense the job can be

Im an electrical quantity surveyor and im not surprised at the cost, he is probably a bit strong on the labour.

Basically what your looking at is: 2 men for a day (or one man for 2 days): 16hrs x €40/hr = €640

Materials wise chrome switches are about 13euro (9x13=117) socket points including wiring are around €40 a piece (5x40=€200)

Moving the gas timer is a simple job, id allow €20 for that

Total €337, €63 for the lights roughly, id say hes buying a cheap 2d fitting for that. so theres your 400 in materials.

Id be fairly sure that price is ex vat

Check the tax rules - if he doesn't quote VAT up front to an individual (as opposed to a business) are you obliged to pay it?

Or you could ask him is with or without VAT rather trying to screw him.

Don't for get that going from plastic to metal switches as so requires they have an earth. So it is not just the cost of the switchs and a matter of swapping them over, chances are new wires have to be run as well.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Could you get some of the parts yourself and see if you can get them cheaper?

Eh, as opposed to him trying to screw the OP?

Who says he's trying to screw the op? Nobody knows the actual work involved here, or the labour. Some people still think 100 a day is too much money.

Are the new and alterations being chased or is it surface work?

Lads all prices discussed here need to include Vat.

We were advised to let you guys know that we are not to suggest that jobs are carried out under the table, i.e for cash.
    So please don't suggest it.

There is a lot of speculative conversation going on here. I don't see the point in pulling someone's price apart. It generally only encourages one-upmanship comments about a job most have not seen.

If you want a better price OP why don't you just get another one, you obviously don't trust this contractor.
