Hyundai I30 not starting

    Hi Folks
I have a Hyundai I30 1.6 that lately won't start - getting more frequent. I took it to a mechanic who said he would have to see it happening to properly diagnose it but from what I was saying the 'electronics' in the key fob and the car are not connecting.

If I turn the key slightly so all the lights come on etc and then wait for a minute and start the car it usually works - sometimes it doesnt so I have to turn it off and do it again. This morning it took 10 minutes before it started! All the lights come on the dash as normal but there is a click sound when I try to start the car.

Would getting a completely new key help and if so where would I go?

The previous generation of hyundais were fairly prone to this. Generally it's the receiver on the ignition barrel that's faulty, not the key. Sounds like it's well worth investigating in this case, they aren't greatly expensive.

The click sound would suggest a starter issue but this should be very easy to diagnose.

If it was an immobiliser issue, surely the engine would turn but not catch,

    Depends on the car.
Some will do nothing when you turn the key (eg Ford)
Some will allow the engine to start then cut it after a second or 2 (VW)
And some will allow it to crank over but not start.

I have seen older Hyundais with faulty key readers but not recently and I must admit I can't remember for sure how they behave when they have an immobiliser fault but I think they don't allow the engine to crank over at all.

I think the older stuff (trajets, accepts etc) allows it to crank.

    UK warranty transfers to here.
Obviously you might be over 5 years now.

Is there any lights remaining on or flashing? Maybe Hyundai are different but certainly on the Skoda/VW cars the orange key light will keep flashing on the dash. It sounds more like a starter fault in your case.

Sod it. By about a month!
How do I check though just in case?

The receivers can go fault on these rarely the keys.

If the immo light stay ON when you turn the ignition on all is ok with the immo system.

If the immo light doesn't appear when you can't start the car there a problem with the system.
