Looks like the gardener's enemy - a weevil.

Vine weevil. The critter lays its eggs at the roots of plants and when they hatch they suck the roots of the plants which then keel over with no roots. Look out for cream coloured little bugs with brownish end. Can do a lot of damage to your plants especially in containers.

Are you sure it is not a solitary wasp? I know that is quite a jump (Diptera to Hymenoptera) but it is hard for me to judge the scale/jizz. Apologies if I am way off.

Thanks Desmo. I think you might be right re it being a solitary wasp. It was about the same size as a Marmelade Hoverfly.

Thanks. Its the recently released Nikon Coolpix P900. The zoom lens (up to 83X or 2000mm) is quite handy for wildlife photography.

Its a Cuckoo bee, Nomada sp, possibly Nomada goodeniana. Second yellow band on abdomen looks to be entire.

Thanks splish. N goodeniana looks to be quite localised in Ireland. I'll see if I can get some better pics.
